Kate Boyer-66 yo man competes in the Vendee Globe "Everest of the Seas"

The Vendee Globe is a sailing race that spans the whole world, each competitor must complete the voyage on a 60 foot s/v(sailing vessel) alone. The 2016 competition begins in 7 hours as of now, Sunday, November 6, 2016, 1:17 p.m. This race is extremely dangerous and has caused 3 deaths and many life-threatening experiences since the first race in 1989. 66 year old Rich Wilson will be competing this year; he will hold the title as the oldest skipper to ever attempt the race. This is not, however, the first time competing in the race. He has already completed the race once and is now going back to attempt beating the world record of 78 days. In his first attempt, he broke two ribs withing the first week. He never dropped out of the race. Instead, he slept over the chart table and waited for the gale(fancy sailing word for storm) to pass and proceeded to sail across the Indian Ocean.

As a sailor, I am fascinated by this article. I lived on a boat when the last competition took place in 2012-2013. The longest overnight sailing passage I've ever gone was 11 days from Virginia to the British Virgin Islands. I was with my parents and 2 sisters and we were the only ones aboard. I remember it being a huge struggle between both of my parents trading shifts (our autopilot broke down) so I can't even begin to imagine how hard this must be for the sailors.

Current Event: Arctic Sea Ice Disappears

                In this video, NASA put together a time lapse where you can watch the decrease of the Arctic’s perennial ice. Perennial ice survives the summer melt season, is at least 4 years old, and can grow up to 4 meters thick. In March of 1984 there was 2.1 million square kilometers of perennial ice, but as of March 2016 there are only 211,000 square kilometers left.

                This is very concerning news, because it seems that someday soon the Arctic will be completely melted, and water levels will rise significantly. There has been a very significant decrease in the ice that is supposed to survive melting season, so if the Arctic melts one day, where will Santa come from, and what will parents tell their children in the future? Where will the polar bears go? Hopefully something can be done to help fix global warming to help prevent the Arctic from melting.

So a school in Baltimore seems to have found a better solution to detention which is mediation. It may sound a bit weird but when you think about it, meditation could be very helpful for the troubled students.

In my opinion, I think that this is a great idea. With detention all a child has to do is think about their action that got them into detention in the first place. With meditation, they could get the issue of their mind and just relax. I feel like if more schools did this, the happier students will be

Meditation or Detention? Melanie Escalante

An elementary school in Baltimore sends their students to a room of meditation rather than a form of detention. Not all of the students who attend the elementary school have stable lives at home, In response to the common issue, faculty and staff have created a solution. If a student were to act out in class, typically they would be sent to an administrator for further discipline. However, they are sent to the meditation room where they do breathing exercises, yoga, and address the problem or talk about their frustration. The program has shown success through the behavior of the students and decrease of students who are sent to "The Office". A Baltimore high school has been influenced by the "Mindful Moment Room" and has taken similar actions for the sake of their students. The co-founders hope to expand this program in the near future.

It's different compared to other forms of discipline but I think it is very convenient.  Attempting to do this at a junior high or high school would be harder, from my perspective. It is very clever to teach these kids at a young age so they can carry on these skills later in life. I feel that if we would've had a meditation room at my elementary school, our behavior would be much different. I'm glad a change is being made and I hope it can grow into a popular way of teaching.

Analysis: Today the craziest thing happened on the beach of Siberia. I thought it was unbelievable that tennis ball sized snowballs mysteriously appeared at a beach. It stunned me that of all the places they could've appeared at, the beach?! I honestly think this is a positive message, cause like who doesn't want to see strange new things? This makes me want to go over to Russia and take a picture with these strange curiosities.

Summary: On November 5th a strange discovery was released on the news by BBC. On the coast of a Russian beach in Siberia, a huge amount of giant snow balls were found. These rare sculptures of nature stand a range of being the size of a golf ball up to a foot wide! Not only that, but this stretched 11 miles wide through out the area.

Samsung is dealing with more explosions, but this time its with washing machines. Many people have reported that their washing machine exploded while they were washing bulky things on a high spin cycle. After a recall and lawsuit, Samsung is offering customers who stay with them $150 on their next one. I would need more than $150 to continue putting exploding washers in my house.
