Ship Capsizes off Australia--Sydney Abdo

In the waters between Australia and Indonesia recsuers managed to pull 130 people out from about the 134 people believed to be on board. Unfortunately one body was recovered dead and three more were thought to have gone down with the ship.
The rescue has now been called off as there are no more survivors or deceased being spotted.
This is the second ship to capsize in the same area in a week. It is hard for authorities to know exactly how many people were on these ships as many people sneak on illegally.

3D Printer Saves Child - Elvira Gamboa

Kaiba, a 6 week old boby, had bronchial malacia. It had his family worried about him because they had to give him CPR many times. As a method to clear it up a splint was created using a 3D printer. The thing is it hasn't been tried on a human before. The splint was made of PCL which also slowly breaks down. The split worked successfully. Kaiba is now 18 months old and still breathing normally.

Disney Explosion - Elvira Gamboa

Recently at Disneyland there was a small explosion at Disneyland. It was in the Toontown section and once the explosion was heard the area was evacuated. It was caused by a plastic container with dried ice that was thrown into a trash can. Christian Barnes, a vendor at Disneyland, is the suspect and he is fully cooperating with the police.

Austrailia's Ford plants are being shut down!

On October 2016, Ford Moter plans to shut its two Australian plants. Their reasons behind this decision is due to the strong concurrences of the costs that are hitting manufacturers. This will resort in the loss of 1200 jobs in Austrailia leaving many people upset and without pay.

Analysis:  The author of this article, Reuters, seemed to present and idea that the decade of manufacturing and construction is beginning to decline emensly.
Reuters wrote the article on May 23, 2013. This really has them thinking that pretty soon they won't be able to rely on manufacturer jobs and may have to seek jobs elsewhere.

Mad man in Austrailia

On May 15, 2013, a German jewel thief, Carlo Konstantin, was convicted o exporting drugs. He was then transported to through Bangcock. While under Austrailian export he managed to escape his guards and flee from the airport leaving Australian guards embarrassed.
The author of the article,Sarrah Titterton, seemed to have a point that this incident proved to be embarrassing and humiliating for the Australian government due to allowing for this mishap to happen. She wrote the article at 10:29 am on May 28, 2013.
I believe this article was written to create awareness of how important it is for the government to keep crimininals under control for the safety of everyone.

Pelicans Are Being Used For Target Practice in Western Australia - Lysette Barrera

Two pelicans were found with arrows shot through their body in Western Australia. While one survived and is being rehabilitated, the other had to be put down because of internal injuries. Shooting birds in such a manner is illegal, not to mention cruel an inhumane.

The first bird that was put down was found with an arrow through it's chest at Soldier's Cove near Mandurah. A week later, another pelican was shot through both of it's wings near Samphire Cove.

The attacks were investigated by authorities. Violators of the law protecting pelicans in Western Australia  will face a maximum penalty of $4,000.

Kidnapped Chinese Boy Finds His Way Home After 23 Years  by Using Google Maps - Lysette Barrera

Lou Gang was only 5 years old when he was kidnapped on his way to school, 23 years ago. His parents searched for him for years but eventually gave up the seemingly hopeless endeavor. Gang was treated like family by his kidnappers and new "parents", but he never completely forgot the life he was taken from. He was able to roughly sketch a map of his old town, and poste a request for information on a website that helped missing children and their families. He was answered by a person who informed him that 23 years ago a family lost their son when he was declared missing, and by using google maps, Gang immediately recognized his town. He has reunited with his family but no charges have been placed yet.

Twenty-eight Bodies are Found in the Tunnel in Indonesia By: Nina Bharadwaj

Many workers have found every single body, twenty-eight to be exact, in an underground mining place in Indonesia. The bodies were found dead due to a collapsed tunnel. Around ten more people were saved in the accident. The accident happened on May 14 around 500 meters away from the beginning of the mining tunnel facility named Big Gossan Mine. The miners in this tunnel mine for silver, copper, and gold.
All mining in this tunnel has stopped, and a company named PT Freeport has made it public that the mining facility will not return to its normal daily activities until further investigation happens to find out how the collapse happened. The president of Freeport, Richard Adkerson said "With the recovery work completed we are now focusing on reviewing safety throughout our underground operations and in determining what caused the collapse. We will take all actions required to provide for the safety of our work force."
He says that their company has always been number one on their list of priorities, and it will always be number one. Apparently, the goal of the workforce it to greatly decrease the amount of accidents that happen. They would also, of course, really like to decrease the amount of deaths that happen, but all accidents are unintentional, so they can not really control that aspect. He says "Facilities are unacceptable for our company."
As of right now, their company is trying to create an investigation group to determine the cause of the accident as well as what can be done to prevent further accidents. In the group, they are hoping to have experts from all over the world as well as experts from Indonesia that know about mining and geotechnical science. Adkerson quotes "We will be transparent in the investigation and its findings and cooperating with the authorities from the Government of Indonesia."
Analysis: The authors of this article were the CNN staff. I believe that this article was written to inform us of what has happened in Indonesia and how it has affected them greatly. It also affects everyone around the world because it is a huge caution to be very careful and safe. Also, if you are wanting to be in the mining business, risks will have to be taken. This article is written for mostly adults that will understand the subject and the damage it has caused. The main idea is that 28 bodies were found in the tunnel, and 10 were rescued. The accident took place in east Papua. Investigations will take place. Their is no sense of bias because it is all facts.
I think this accident is just awful. I would hate to have a family member or friend that suffered in this accident just because they were doing their job. I really would like to know the cause of this accident because it could help us prevent things like this in the future. Although, accidents always happen, and we can't control when they decide to take place.

Passenger Made 'Unusual' Statements Before Trying to Open Emergency Exit Door on Alaska Airlines Flight, FBI Says by Madeleine Bright

A man who made "unusual" statements and tried to open an airplane door in-flight today was subdued by passengers and crew members until the plane landed in Portland, Ore., and he was taken into custody, federal officials said.
Alexander Michael Herrera, 23, was arrested by FBI agents at Portland International Airport on a charge of interfering with a flight crew on Alaska Airlines Flight No. 132 from Anchorage to Portland. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and is expected to make his first appearance in federal court on Tuesday, according to federal officials.
(Multnomah County Sheriff's Office)Authorities said the incident unfolded as the flight, with 137 passengers on board, began its descent into the Portland area.
Passengers and crew members who were interviewed by Port of Portland Police officers said Herrera made unusual statements before he tried to open the door. However federal officials declined to elaborate on what Herrera allegedly said.
Ryan Oelrich told ABC News he was sleeping on board the flight when he awoke to a "loud hissing noise" and "lots of screaming."
"My first thought was that the plane must be going down, but then I heard someone screaming to stop him, take him down," he said. "I looked behind me and in the exit row was a very large gentleman who was attempting to open the exit row door."
Oelrich said passengers seated near Herrera in Row 17 jumped on him and hold him down until flight attendants could bring restraints.
Alaska Airlines said the emergency door on the 737-800 is equipped with a lock to prevent it from being opened in-flight.
The airline said crew members did an excellent job restraining Herrera, who sat calmly until the flight landed and he was handed over to authorities.
Oelrich, who is a frequent business traveler, said he was thankful his fellow passengers stepped in to defuse the situation.
After Herrera was led off the plane in hand cuffs, the passengers who held him down exited next, Oelrich said.
"The entire plane, to the best of our ability, gave them a standing ovation for what they did," he said. "I'm so very thankful there are people out there who are willing to step up and do their part."

Twenty One Pilots Know Exactly What to Do For an Encore

It's a time-honored concert cliché. A lead singer claims that his/her band's show is coming to what seems like a premature end. The band then leaves the stage. Of course, everyone in the audience knows that the band is coming back...but the fans dutifully clap and cheer, on cue, until the musicians' egos are sufficiently inflated and an acceptable, probably predetermined number of minutes have passed. Finally, said musicians return to the stage and play the song they were planning to do all along.
But on Sunday night, when Ohio alt-rock twosome Twenty One Pilots played a Yahoo! On the Road gig at Seattle's historic Moore Theatre, eccentric frontman Tyler Joseph — a man always in touch with his fans — kept it real and pulled back the curtain on this silly charade.
As the duo's frenetic set on a bill with Willy Moon, Capital Cities, and Gossip came to a close, Tyler straight-up informed the crowd: "So we have two songs left. But I'm gonna lie to you and say we only have one, because we'd like you to do an encore [with] us. It's always funny to me; if you've ever seen a live show, I think bands are funny, because they're always like, 'We have one song left, see ya!' And it's like, 'Bro, you didn’t play the one good song!'

"After this song, we'll even do the 'one more song' chant with you," Tyler offered helpfully, as amused fans whooped and laughingly agreed to play along with the ruse.

Consoler in cheif by Madeleine Bright

"I'm just a messenger here today, letting everybody here know that you are not alone, that you've got folks behind you."
After touring the tornado damage in Oklahoma, on Sunday, President Barack Obama found himself in an all-too-familiar role: consoler in chief. From Tucson to Newtown, Joplin to Moore, Obama's visits to cities and towns torn apart by tragedy have become an important, if sadly routine, part of his presidency.
"Whenever I come to an area that's been devastated by some natural disaster like this, I want to make sure everybody understands I'm speaking on behalf of the entire country," Obama said, standing where the Plaza Towers Elementary School once stood. "Everywhere, fellow Americans are praying with you."
"This is a strong community with strong character," he continued. "There's no doubt they're going to bounce back."
A little over a month ago at a church in Boston's South End, the president delivered a similar message in the wake of the marathon bombings.
"Scripture tells us to run with endurance the race that is set before us," Obama said at the interfaith service. "This doesn't stop us. And that's what you've taught us, Boston. That's what you've reminded us, to push on. To persevere. To not grow weary. To not get faint. Even when it hurts. Even when our heart aches. We summon the strength that maybe we didn't even know we had, and we carry on. We finish the race."

Fire breaks out on cruise by Madeleine Bright

BALTIMORE (AP) — A fire that broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean ship Monday did enough damage that the rest of the cruise was canceled and the company said the more than 2,200passengers will be flown from the Bahamas back to Baltimore where the trip began.
The fire that began at 2:50 a.m. Monday was extinguished about two hours later with no injuries reported. A cause wasn't immediately known. The Grandeur of the Seas, which left Baltimore on Friday, never lost power and was able to sail into port in Freeport, Bahamas, Monday afternoon. It had been planned to be a seven-night cruise.
Royal Caribbean said on its website and through social media that executives met with passengers in port and that the cruise line is arranging flights for all 2,224 guests on Tuesday. It said passengers will receive a full refund of their fare and a certificate for a future cruise.

The fire-damaged exterior of Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship is seen while docked in Freeport, Grand Bahama island, Monday, May 27, 2013. 28 Bodies Recovered from Tunnel Collapse-Molly Paley

28 additional bodies were rescued from a tunnel collapse in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, earlier this week. The tunnel at the underground mine training facility collapsed after a landslide. 10 bodies were initially after the immediate collapse. The mining company is doing all that it can to prevent a collapse from reoccurring, including setting up an investigation. The company CEO says that fatalities are not ok for the company; their workforce is their number one priority. I hope that the company can make changes to their training facilities to ensure that a disaster like this can never happen. I hope the workers who were rescued recover.

A sweet doodle that won by Graysha Assoun

A school girl submitted this design to a competition to have it put on Google's homepage. If you dont know where this is located, normally it is on the homepage and there will be little pictures that appear cleverly embedded between the G-O-O-G-L-E. The Google letters are in the backround of the picture, which makes this piece not only heart warming, but also unique. For this year's annual competition "Doodle for Google," the theme was to draw the best day ever. This girl drew when her dad came back from the war. The girl was named Sabrina Brady and she is 17 years old. She won against 130,000 entries. Winning this competition she received a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant. Her hopes on spending this money is going to an arts school later this year.
Congratulations Sabrina Brady!

Basements scarce in tornado-prone Oklahoma City area/ makayla sifuentes 8th period

It's one of the most familiar pieces of advice from authorities to people in the path of a tornado: Get into your basement. Yet few homes in the Oklahoma City area have them -- even though that state is hit by far more powerful tornadoes than most others. "Probably less than one tenth of one percent" of the houses in Moore are built with basements, said Mike Hancock, president of Basement Contractors in Edmond, Oklahoma. "There's just such a misconception that you cannot do it." Why? Hancock cited the area's high groundwater levels and heavy clay as among the reasons some people believe -- wrongly, he said -- that basements are tough to construct. this tory shows that not all shelter are safe and stable. FBI mourns loss of agents in hostage rescue training/ makayla sifuentes 8th period

The FBI is mourning the deaths of two special agents killed Friday during a training exercise off the coast of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The agents, Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw, were assigned to the FBI's Critical Incident Response Group. The FBI said the cause of the incident is under review. "We mourn the loss of two brave and courageous men," FBI Director Robert S. Mueller said in a statement issued Sunday. "Like all who serve on the Hostage Rescue Team, they accept the highest risk each and every day, when training and on operational missions, to keep our nation safe. Our hearts are with their wives, children, and other loved ones who feel their loss most deeply. And they will always be part of the FBI Family." A law enforcement official said the agents were killed while training to use a rope for landing on a ship from a helicopter. The official said the helicopter encountered weather difficulties and the agents fell into the water rather than making a landing on the ship. The official believed winds were a factor but did not know if it was raining at the time. The official said the agents died as a result of the impact rather than drowning. London attack mirrors plot to behead Muslim soldier/ makayla sifuentes 8th period

The attack on a soldier hacked to death on a London street has echoes of other plots on British soil in recent years. The victim of Wednesday's attack in Woolwich was a serving soldier based at a nearby barracks, London police say, and the UK government is treating it as a suspected terrorist attack. In 2007 four men were imprisoned over a plot to kidnap and kill a British Muslim soldier on leave and behead him in a Birmingham garage. The group's ringleader Parviz Khan intended to behead the soldier "like a pig" and release footage of the killing on the internet. Khan was later imprisoned for life and must serve a minimum of 14 years before he will be considered for release. Three other men, Basiru Gassama, Mohammed Irfan, and Hamid Elasmar, were handed down sentences of between two and seven years for their roles in the plot. this story allows people to realize that people are willing to kill to find what they are looking for. Turkish Blogger Sent to Prison for Blasphemy by Graysha Assoun

A Turkish/ Armenian blogger was sent to court to be on trial for blasphemy. The court decided to sentence him to more than a year in prison (exactly one year and forty five-day jail sentence). The man accused for blasphemy was named Sevan Nisanyan. He accused the Islamic-rooted government for persecuting him saying: "When I attacked the Islamist establishment they felt I overstepped my boundaries." He said that because he is an Armenian is changes things when you go for Islamic religions. Saying that what he did was "the height of boldness."  Because Turkey is a majority Muslim country, the press and everyone really think what Nisanyan did was bad. The whole big issue started with him writing a blog post that referred to the international uproar from a movie called "Innocence of Muslims." This film made fun of a greatly respected figure in Islam religion, Mohammed, which sparked riots and violence. Nisanyan realized that he was throwing fuel on the fire regarding his conviction. Supposedly, this is not the first time people have been convicted of insulting Islam in Turkey. A lot of press has triggered this issue and because of this the judge ruled "not to postpone the punishment" The judge said this because this is not the first thing Nisanyan has done, he has a record.
So, Sevan Nisanyan is serving his year and 45 days and not happily.

Daiel Maraire #RIPKelsi !!

"Grand Prairie police identified Kirkland Reed, 45, as the suspect in the murder of Jennifer Krieger and her teenage daughter on May 19.
Reed was located at a hospital in Almagordo, New Mexico and taken into custody.
Reed and Krieger were in a relationship and both lived at the home in the 1800 block of Sandra Lane where the murders occurred.
Detectives from the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit traveled to New Mexico to interview the suspect. There they seized additional evidence. Police gave no details on the nature of the evidence.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the cause of death."
This is the hardest one I've written so far because the teenage girl that died I knew her and we went to school together. They say Mr.Krieger left the home and was very upset at something that happend in the home then later left and killed them both then exited to New Mexico. Then was later found and token in jail. All I have to say is I miss you kelsi and I know god has you #RIP

"A MAN believed to be a serving British soldier was hacked to death in south east London metres away from his barracks by two men with meat cleavers ranting "we swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you".

After reading this story it made me want to do more research because I was kinda confused on why they wanted to fight in the 1st place. But my question was we're was all the people when this man had  2 people with machetes about to kill him ? I always felt like when ever rare things like this take place I always think it's a inside job , what do y'all think ?

Lately the states have been having lots of bad weather including tornados. The last one has hit Oklahoma and has hit it bad form what I've heard there was 24 people killed in total and 2 of those people happened to be infants. This story is really heart touching because they were just little babies and on top of that may of people's homes were damaged horribly.

"Case Futrell, 4 months old, and mother Megan Futrell, 29, died of blunt-force trauma, according to an information sheet released by the Oklahoma City medical examiner’s office. A cousin told the Oklahoman newspaper’s online edition that Megan Futrell had sought refuge from the storm for herself and her baby in the walk-in cooler of a 7-Eleven that was destroyed in the storm". The Billboard awards were sunday night and I couldn't help but notice that the was some sort of bulling going on between Justin Bieber and the audience . "Justin Bieber was greeted with an unusual sound when he accepted the Milestone Award at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards: booing. The singer responded to his critics with a heartwarming speech that won the crowd over ... just kidding. "I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously," Beebs insisted, without taking his sunglasses off. "All this other bull should not be spoken of." Bieber also said "I'm 19 years old ... I think I'm doing a pretty good job" and "I really just want to say it should really be about the music. It should be about the craft that I'm making." The Milestone Award is a new accolade that's voted for by fans, so it's no surprise that Bieber won."

Not only after reading this but also after watching it I was a bit disappointed because believe it or not that is a type of bullying and nobody deserves that no matter what you do regardless weather the world thinks you deserve it or not .

Camels Plague Australia

The Australian continent is known for its diverse wildlife, but the casual foreigner would not expect camels to be part of the ecosystem. Alas, there are over 750,000 camels living in the outback, and it's causing quite a problem.
Camels were first introduced to Australia in the nineteenth century by British colonists to assist with transport and farm work, but with the development of vehicles, the camel fell into disuse and most were abandoned.
However, the camels thrived in the desert environment and cause damage to both the native wildlife and the ecosystem. The camels drink too much water, leaving barely any for the native plants and animals. The camels also pose a threat to farmers, since the camels damage irrigation pipes and eat the farmers' crops.
I think this is a classic example of the negative consequences of humans trying to change their environment. I believe the Australian government should do something about the problem before the camels cause further damage.

Killer Text Messages -Hadassah Lai

Thousands of text messages have been sent to thousands of residents in Australia with a threatening message. Police agencies across Australia have been notifying the residents about these death threats text messages. They are telling the people to delete the messages immediately upon receiving it and to not panic, since it will give the scammer a perfect opportunity. The police were surprised by this style of spam. They said that there was no other scam that has reached that many people in Australia in the matter of a few hours. The message reads: "Sum1 paid me to kill you. Get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised." It then directs the recipient to contact them at a Yahoo email account.

I find this so interesting. I think that the elderly will be the ones to fall for this scam since they don't know much about technology. If this happened to me, I would immediately delete it and forget about it because scam happens so much these days.

Boy Dies After Falling From Pogo Stick by Corsica Steding

A boy, seven years old,  fell from his pogo stick today and hit his head in Sydney.  Ambulance officers were called right away and told that the boy was unconscious and not breathing.  They pronounced him dead when they arrived.  The circumstances around the boy's death are being investigated by police.

This article was written today by Melissa Davey for The Sydney Morning Herald.  Before reading this article I hadn't heard of someone dying like this poor boy.  I think that it's very strange and that something else might have happened.  I know that pogo sticks aren't the easiest to maneuver, but this boy's death is still very unusual.

Disney has announced that in addition to the new sequel trilogy of Star Wars, there will also be two standalone films apart from the main ones. They will be released sometime after summer 2015, which is when Episode VII will be released. George Lucas, who is not incharge of Star Wars anymore, after Disneys recent purchase of the franchise, but is rather a creative director, says on his website LucasFilms that each film will focus on a specific character. More details will be released later. There is already a great team working on them. I find this article unbelievable. I am an ENOURMOUS Star Wars fan. I am already so excited for Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. This makes want to scream out loud. It would be awesome if they did a movie on Chewbacca or Lando Calrissian. This is the best thing I've heard all week! http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/05/showbiz/star-wars-spinoffs/index.html?iid=article_sidebar

162 passengers transferred from troubled boat to Australian navy ships- Joseph Katinas

162 passengers who were transferred from a ship en route Wednesday to Christmas Island, the Austrailian government said. Two ships from the Royal Australian Navy were en route Wednesday to the island after accepting the transfer of the passengers, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement. HMA Ship Leeuwin was carrying 99 passengers, three of whom were receiving medical treatment, and HMA Ship Wollongong was carrying the 63 passengers, the authority said. I find this article interesting. I'm glad everyone is okay. http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/03/world/asia/australia-indonesia-boat/index.html

Drought in Australia By: Zaria Chambers

Severe drought is being experienced in Western Australia. This part of Australia has had extreme temperatures and extreme weather events. The extreme drought has affected farmers the most. The extreme temperatures have stopped the growth of crops. Australia is trying to find a way to help the farmers during this time.

This article is scary. I hope that the people can find a new way to help these farmers so that they can be able to grow crops and continue to make money off of them.

Regardless of wins, female athletes fly economy- Joseph Katinas

The women's basketball team and the Japanese women's soccer team flew in premium economy seats on their flights to Europe, while the men has to sit in the business class. The women's Austrailianbasketball team has also won three silver medals in the last three Olympics, while the Aussie men have actually won none. It is also important to note that the Japanese soccer team for women won last year's World Cup. There has been some controversity over the flights and how the two sexes are not being treated equally. I find this article interesting. I'm glad that the women are being strong and well in sports, but if they are completely separating them on purpose, I think that's a little weird. http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/20/world/asia/olympic-flights-gender/index.html

'Pay up or die': Thousands of Australians receive death threat text message- Joseph Katinas

On Monday, across Australia police agencies put out alerts declaring as fake text messages and emails sent to tons of Australians saying they had to pay $5000 or die. The police say to delete immediately and never respond. The police have dealt with these people before but they have never seen it reach this far out. Many officials say there is absolutely nothing like this. While the police would not tell reporters who the person was, they said they were shocked. I find this article suprising. It's amazing what phones can do to harm people. http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/23/tech/australia-death-threat-text-messages/index.html

Malaysian Woman Re-Elected to Parliament Despite Her Parties Failure by Corran Nolan

Nurul Izzah Anwar, who's opposition coalition failed to win this months national election, was again re-elected to her seat in Malaysia's Parliament. She got into politics at the age of 19 after her father had been jailed for corruption charges. She believed he was innocent and started to work on getting him out. He now leads a coalition of 3 opposition groups, and she has a stable political career. She is warm, friendly, and a pious Muslim, but when asked whether or not she wants to be Prime Minister, she says that "I am already a member of Parliament. If you were a teacher, would you want to become a headmaster?"
This article shows that the world's and particularly the Islamic view of women is changing, because before a women could not have even run for Parliament, but now Nurul has a promising career in politics. It also shows how social reform brought about change in the mind of younger generations, who are more open to new ideas.

Australian politician injured in kangaroo attack -Jamie Lerman

A kangaroo attacked an Australian politician  He suffered cuts and gashes all up down his leg. He was on a morning jog when it suddenly turned violent. "It started hopping around, it was a bit panicked. I ducked for cover and ended up on the ground. The kangaroo jumped on me in its attempt to get away." said the politician  After the kangaroo attacked him, it ran off in the opposite direction.
This really isn't something you hear every day. We never stereotype kangaroos as being violent, but after all they are wild animals. If you're ever in Australia, keep an eye out for crazed kangaroos.

Mother dies, father missing on family trip to remote Australian beach- jamie Lerman
A family sets out on a trip of a life time when they decide to go on a trip all along the coastline of Australia. But things go wrong when the family is swimming by the sea and they find the mother lying face down in the water. A witness says they saw the father floating away too and then become submerged in the water. They declared the mother dead and are still in search for the father.

This is such a crazy and wild thing to happen. It's not clear if they know the cause of death or if any other similar occurances have happened, but hopefully they can figure out what has been happening.

Hot air balloons collide in Turkey; 3 dead By: Halle Van De Hey

In this article written by Gul Tuyysuz of CNN, talks about a hot air ballon collision in Turkey that ultimately killed three Brazilian tourists. This accident also injured 22 people. The accident specifically occurred in Cappadocia, Turkey. It was reported that the ballon's envelop ripped open, after colliding with another ballon's basket. This crash is the latest in a series of crashes that have happened this year.

I think this is so scary. I am afraid of heights and I could never imagine this happening. I am so sorry for the people who were involved in the crash, and hope everyone who was injured is ok. I am also sorry for the families who were affected by this tragedy.

14 now known dead, 14 missing in Indonesia tunnel collapse- jamie lerman

In Indonesia there was a tunnel collapse that left 14 dead and 14 missing or unaccounted for. This occurred when the workers were in a mine training facility. they were mining for gold, copper, and silver in the area. It occurred around 500 meters away from the Big Gossun Mine. It is reported that the cause is because of a landslide and the land became unstable and collapsed on the mine workers.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/20/world/asia/indonesia-mine-collapse/index.html?hpt=ias_c2

Hopefully the rescue workers can find the missing workers and help any injured workers. Even though it happened a week ago, it can affect the area for a while and hopefully they can get over this tragedy soon so the community can be stabilized again.

Rare island fox rebounds on California islands

A rare and tiny island fox is on the verge of making a comeback from near-extinction in the Channel Islands, a rugged and wind-swept chain off Southern California, officials said Monday.
The population of the fox dropped to an all-time low of just 70 animals on Santa Cruz Island in 2000 before rebounding to 1,300 foxes now, said Yvonne Menard, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service. Santa Cruz is the largest island.
Populations on nearby San Miguel and Santa Rosa islands have also bounced back into the hundreds after dropping in 1999 to just 15 of the cat-sized animals on each island.
The island fox is only found on six of the Channel Islands, a chain of eight islands, five of which form a national park. Each of the six islands has its own unique fox subspecies because of generations of genetic isolation.
In a five-year period in the 1990s, fox populations plummeted more than 90 percent on the rugged and mountainous islands due to an influx of golden eagles, which preyed on them.
The eagles were attracted by hundreds of feral pigs on Santa Cruz Island that also made easy prey and were descendants of pigs brought to the island years ago by ranchers.
The food source allowed the eagles to begin to nest on the island, said Tim Coonan, a biologist with the National Park Service.
Four of the six fox subspecies were listed as federally protected endangered species in 2004, but now biologists say their populations on three of the four islands have recovered almost completely.
"They are doing unexpectedly well," Coonan said in a phone interview Monday after a tour of Santa Cruz Island to publicize the program's success.
"I don't think anyone could imagine that 12 years after the decline was discovered .... we'd be looking at recovered populations."

Wallet Theif-Alyssa Hamilton

In Sydney, Australia a 12 year old girl was robbed. Allegedly when she was walking home from a friend's house a man came up beside her and held a gun up to her head and took her wallet and phone.
The police haven't found anything but are still searching.
Here's hoping people realize that working will reap far better rewards then taking.

Two-mile-wide tornado kills at least 51 -- including 7 elementary school students- Jamie Lerman

In Moore Oklahoma, tornadoes touched down on the land and destroyed the area right out side of Oklahoma City. At least 51 people were killed and seven of them were children from Plaza Towers Elementary School. This school was in the direct path of the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/20/us/severe-weather/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

I think it's awful that disasters keep happening all around us. Hopefully rescue workers can find any more injured people and eventually restore the area to the way it was before the tornadoes hit.

Firefighter killed in 6-alarm fire

This morning a firefighter was killed and two more were injured at a 6-alarm fire call in the Hearthwood North Condominium. The firefighter that was killed is Stanely Wilson, who is actually a family friend of mine. His family used to go to church with us for many years, however they left about two, three years ago. I remember that Stan was always at attention, standing straight up with shoulders back, but even though he may look intimidating he was the nicest, funniest guy. The whole family is wonderful and Stan is survived by his mom, Nell, wife, Jenny and his two sons Noah, and Luke. Stan's unit was called out to the fire, during the process of trying to put it out and keep it from spreading Stan got trapped. They believe that he was in one of the hallways when it collapsed in and he was trapped. He radioed in shortly before 5:30 a.m and said that he was trapped and didn't know where he was. That was the last they heard as his radio went dead after that. About 3-4 hours later they finally found his body in the wreckage and carried him out draped in the flag as his fellow firefighters saluted him. Stan was a great man, and a strong Christian. He died a hero, fighting to save others lives, not worrying about his own. I know that this is part of God's plan somehow but my heart still cries for the family that he had to leave behind. My prayers go to the Wilsons in this time of sadness and to the families of the two injured firefighters. God bless you Stan Wilson for serving your country.

North Korea Keeps at It... - Violet Klimaszewski

Over the past 3 days, North Korea has shot 6 nuclear weapons into the Atlantic. The capital says it's just protocol, some "regular military exercise", which was phrased that way to avoid "tension-creating acts". South Korea is investigating why this has happened all of a sudden. Much to North Korea, its show of dominance isn't working. We have bigger guns. ^u^

Australian Family Trip Gone Wrong: Amanda Kipp

Two children and their parents planned a wonderful year long road trip along the Australian coast; this Wednesday it took a turn for the worst.

While stopped at a remote beach off the west coast of Australia, the parents decided to go for a swim. While drifting offshore the parents got into some trouble. The children soon saw their mother floating face down in the water. They watched as other people on the beach attempted to perform CPR on their mom after her body came to shore. The father however was spotted for a brief amount of time floating in the water before disappearing underwater. Kathreen Ricketson (mom) was thought to have drowned and the search still continues for Robert Shugg (dad) but authorities say there is little hope for finding him alive now. It is so sad how an adventure of a lifetime came to such a depressing and quick ending. Remember to be safe whenever you go swimming in the ocean and do not go in if it seems to dangerous.

Tornado!! (vanessa de la cruz)

In MOORE, Oklahoma 37 were killed in Oklahoma by a tornado. A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through  Oklahoma City suburbs on Monday, flattening an entire neighborhood. The  winds were up to 200 mph, setting buildings on fire and blowing a lower elementary school away. There were no offficail confirmed deaths, but at least 60 people were reported injured, including more than a dozen children. Rescuers attented to a  desperate rescue effort at the school, pulling children from heaps of debris and carrying them to a safer place.
Block after block of the community lays in ruins. Homes were crushed into piles of broken wood. Cars and trucks were left crumpled on the road. The National Weather Service issued an initial finding that the tornado was an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale, the second most-powerful type of twister. Many land lines have been stricken and cellphone traffic has been congested. The storm was so massive that it took time to establish communications between rescuers and state officials, the governor said. At Plaza Towers Elementary School, the storm tore off the roof, knocked down walls and turned the playground into a mass of twisted plastic and metal. Several children were pulled alive from the rubble. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain to the triage center in the parking lot. How tragic this is for Oklahoma after begin hit not long ago in Joplin. PLease pray for the families here.

Oklahoma is Hit --- Post by: Addison Norman

Oklahoma is Hit
Post by: Addison Norman

Just today, Monday May 20, the southern areas of Oklahoma City as well as other areas have been hit drastically by tornados. At a time the tornado was reported to be 2 miles wide. A tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, and the storm destroyed homes, buildings and cars. As of right now 6 people are dead and many others are injured. Hospitals are other rescue services from near areas have come to aid Moore. An elementary school building was hit and students and teachers are continuing to be rescued from the destroyed building. It is estimated that close to 32,000 buildings and homes are with out power. The tornado that has devastated Moore was rated at least an EF-4 on the magnitude level. Level 4 tornados have winds from 166 mph to 200mph.
It is utterly important and serious to be aware of the natural disasters that you can be subject to. I have thought of this because North Texas being in the Tornado Valley and Dallas having Moore, OK so closed  it’s important to be prepared. People should always have emergency plans in case of natural disasters to help keep safe.

Dallas Firefighter Trapped and Killed by Madeline Ibarra

This morning, Monday the 20th, a Dallas firefighter was trapped in a six alarm blaze at a condominium complex. the trapped man has been identified as Stanley Wilson. On a typical scale, fires do not reach over a five alarm blaze, which means the most ladder truck, hoses, police men, ambulance, and response teams are sent to the sight. This case was marked as a six alarm blaze because they had a missing and trapped man at the scene as well as an out of control, ongoing fire. The cause of Wilson's death has not been determined yet, but it is believed to maybe be from suffocation. Two other firefighters have been taken to hospitals for injury and two local residents where treated on site for smoke inhalation. At least 5 residents from the building were saved from the fire.
I heard about this report on the radio this morning, and I thought that it was shocking and sad. The fire started as early as 4am and the first responders were the ones who saved the most people but also took the most damage. To know that we have these kinds of heroes in our city and willing to risk themselves for our safety makes me feel a little safer in this messed up world. For the family of Mr. Wilson, I hope that they understand that he died a hero and saving other lives.
