Flint, Michigan Bacteria - Lauren Rothert

After living with contaminated water for almost two years, Flint, Michigan has been hit with another flurry of problems. The crisis this time is Shigellosis, an infectious bacterial disease. Symptoms of this sickness include; bloody diarrhea, and fever. Shigellosis is spread by not washing your hands, and since the citizens of Flint do not trust the water, this makes sense. Many people rely on baby wipes to clean themselves rather than bathing. The problem with this disease, is, it is highly contagious so it is spreading fast.

I believe that the residents of Flint, Michigan have very poor sanitary conditions, no one should have to fear bathing or hydrating yourself. At what point should the government take control of this issue that surfaced two years ago? The cases have spiked since the water has been contaminated, especially in children. Sources reported that the youngest child affected was 17 months old. Is it acceptable that two years later, their water supply is still toxic? I would expect people to begin relocating, if they haven't already, to provide a safer life for their children and themselves. It is time that the government steps in to help these people in need, before something catastrophic occurs.

  1. I can't believe that it's already been two years and the problem with the contaminated water still hasn't been solved! This is a major issue, especially since this bacterial disease is contagious and originates from a lack of proper sanitation.

  2. The things that actually matter in the world are put aside and ignored when it's actually a huge problem. Water is really important to health and if it's contaminated, then people will get sick and then they end up in hospitals and then hospitals get crowded and so on, so I think that the world needs to open their eyes.
