Aramaic Language Revival in the Holy Land by Graysha Assoun

Many efforts are being made to keep this lovely language alive and not extinct. One example of the people that want to save the Aramaic language are the Christian Arabs of the Middle East. They have tried to petition for a campaign to teach this language in elementary schools. The Aramic language is a Semitic language which is related to Hebrew and Phoenician and a little more distantly to Arabic. Aramic was a language that dated back from the 10th century and is used as a divine worship. Modern varieties of Aramaic are spoken today as a first language by only a few small largely isolated communities scattered across the Middle East. Just recently did two Christian Arab started teaching to teach Aramaic in their elementary schools.  The elders in the community still speak but the language has died in the younger generations. They believe by teaching the Aramaic language, it will give children a greater appreciation for their Christian heritage. The hope is that the younger generation will use this language casually while talking to eachother. There are signs that children are using this language as they send secret notes to each other in this language. Some people object of the Aramaic language revival project because they think in teaching them more about their Christian heritage, it will distance themselves from their "true" Arab heritage.
I think this is very interesting that people are working so hard for this language to stay alive and give it to the younger generation. I completely agree that this is an excellent idea. I even think that we should kept Ancient Greek and Latin alive by this same method.

  3. It would have been great to learn Greek and Latin in elementary school. Also, most of the English language is based from Greek and Latin, and the language can help with the comprehension of a word meaning.
