Earlier today, there was a liquid ammonia leak at Weng's Cold Storage Industrial Company in Shanghai’s Baoshan district. This substance, used for refrigerating and cleaning purposes, is highly dangerous and suffocates if taken into the lungs. The local officials state that the cause is being investigated by Shanghai's work safety bureau and an environmental monitoring station did not identify negative effects from the accident. Because no open flames emerged after the leak struck, local rescue workers were safe when they closed all valves suspected of being the source of the leak. Unfortunately, there are 25 injured, five being seriously, and fifteen dead. In addition, accidents like these are common in China because of their careless standards for safety in the workspace.

Obama Decides to Use MIlitary Force After the Syrian Chemical Attack by Arianna Cadeddu
Very recently a serious chemical attack by Syria, killing approximately 1,400 people, has lead President Obama to decide to use military force against this foreign nation. "After careful deliberation, I have decided that the U.S. should take military action against Syrian regime targets." As well, the president carefully stated, no soldiers boots will be on the ground, action will be taken by cruise-missile-carrying warships.
The president also decided that action will not be taken until his plan is approved by "the American people's representatives in Congress." However, it has been stated that Obama believes he still has the legal authority to enforce his plan if Congress disapproves.
Many people are against the presidents belief to return the attack, it was said the the protestors could be heard from the opposite side of the White House during Obama's speech. My opinion on this is that while seeking vengeance-rightfully-it would be in America's best interest to avoid any possible wars, seeing to the fact that many have occurred in the past century. However, this hostile act should not go unnoticed. Action should be taken-action that will not lead to the possibility of more U.S. troops dying. In my opinion, in this case, caution should be taken. American's lives should not be risked.

Indian child Roona Begum recovering after hydrocephalus surgery- By: Kindle Kelley
18-month-old Roona Begum from northeastern India, was diagnosed with an extreme version of Hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a disorder which causes cerebral fluid to build up in the brain. Her head ended up growing to 94 centimeters, almost triple the size of a normal baby's head. Roona had 10 liters of fluid in her head, she could barley move. Her family could not afford to pay for her surgery, a journalist came and took pictures of her head, and soon enough people all over the world saw the pictures. Roona's pictures were put on a fundraising website, soon enough they ended up raising more than $60,000, only hoping to raise $1,600. Soon enough after the multiple surgeries her head shrunk to 58 centimeters, which is still larger than the average 38-48 centimeters, but still small enough to allow her to live a normal life.
This is such a terrible thing to have to live with, Roona will always have to live her life She is a fighter, most children die from Hydrocephalus. What those journalist did to help her was a very nice thing, the journalist were moved by her. Now Roona can move around normally, she will always be different, but she will always be thankful for what those people did to help her.

Protect Our Marine Life by Kevin Lawrence
http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical-issues-ocean-acidification/
"Scientists are calling for drastic measures to avert massive bleaching of the world's reef"
Todays shallowed-water sea life is more vuerable to carbonic acid. For millions of years, oceans maintained a relatively stable acidity level. Research shows that the pH of the surface is quickly reducing which can cause distructive world consequences. Carbon dioxide dissolves in the ocean creating carbonic acid which cause higer acidity, mainly near the surface. Also proven to kill the marine animals that live there and is suspected as the cause of reproductive disorders in some fish. "On the pH scale, which runs from 0 to 14, solutions with low numbers are considered acidic and those with higher numbers are basic and 7 is neutral." The past 300 million years the ocean pH has been averaging about 8.2pH units. Now it is around 8.1pH units. Representing a 25% increase in acidity over the past two centuries. Oceans absorb about 1/3 of human-created CO2 which is about 22 million tons per day and cause the pH level to reduce by 0.5pH units. Killing most sea life such as; oysters, shrimp, lobster, many planktonic organism, and even some fish species.

A hidden canyon underneath Greenland's ice By: Katelyn McLane
NASA has found a hidden canyon beneath the surface of Greenland. The "megacanyon" looks about 50% longer than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but not quite as deep. It looks as though it was created from an extensive river system, and most likely predates the 3-kilometer (1.9 miles) thick ice sheet covering it up. Scientists think that it has been covered up for about 4 million years. The canyon was discovered while people were examining the ice sheets that are hiding it, and is an exciting find that just proves that even while we're living in the 21st century, we're still finding gigantic features hidden underneath the Greenland ice sheet that we never knew about before.
I find this discovery fascinating. I'm awed at how much we still have yet to discover on our planet, even with all the technology we have today. It keeps things interesting. It's truly amazing how much the earth can hide for so many centuries, no matter how much more we think there could be for us to find.

Robert Swofford- 2DS! is the end of 3D gaming?
Ever since the debut of the 2DS from Nintendo, People began to speculate that this was a "hideous" and "wired went for weird." However there is nothing different between the 2DS and the 3DS, besides physical appearance and the 2DS does not have the stereoscopic 3D ability unlike the 3DS.
Nintendo says that the 2DS was to accommodate the new Wii U and it's price drop, since the 2DS also has a significant price difference it's 3DS counterpart (3DS-$180, 2DS- around $130).
I find this rather odd of Nintendo to do such a downgraded version of a great portable game system. The initial 3DS's 3D can be turned off and even locked by a parental code, while also having the "clam shell"design (the system closing up to protect the buttons and screens). The 2DS also has the same matted finish as the 3DS XL so the texture will absorb skin oils, and ruin the finish; it also has a limited color choice of red and blue (same as the XL 3DS) while the original 3DS has several colors, such as: red, blue, pink, pruple, black, and several limited edition colors.
However, Nintendo also says that this will help with sales during the Christmas season, since the price is much cheaper, becoming more affordable to more children and families, so I can see Nintendo's reasoning in this extra game system.

This may cause conflict with other countries that want the U.S. not to intervene, other countries think the united stated should wait for the United Nations input and investigation. Also this means that Obama is trying to avoid a war with Syria by not sending troops in.
Israelis and Palestinians Kick Off Peace Talks By Becca Brandt
After much conflict between the two, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators met in Jerusalem on August 23, 2013 to talk peace. It was the third attempt since 2000 to talk peace; the last one being nearly five years ago. The meeting was secret, which was a decision made by both sides to maintain trust and so nothing was leaked to the media. A short video was released of the head negotiators shaking hands. After the several hour meeting, a Palestinian official said they had agreed to meet weekly. "I think what is needed is to prepare and speak and cautiously hope for partial agreements, perhaps on issues of borders and security, economic issues and the policies of the Palestinian state. But we must also prepare for dead ends and blow-ups," says Gilad Sher, a former Israeli peace negotiator. Even though everything may seem resolved between the two, they will still be aware of what is going on in the other.
I think that it is good that Israel and Palestine are at least making an effort to resolve all issues, even if they do not completely trust each other yet. I think that any sign of peacemaking is at least a good start, and who knows, it could lead to more.

Chemotherapy Problem in Ohio by Bob Cummins
An Amish family in Ohio is currently having a legal battle with a hospital on whether or not their daughter, Sarah Hershberger, can stop taking chemotherapy for her leukemia for alternative medicine chosen by her family. The state gives families much freedom of treatment for the illness of their children, but this is a life-or-death situation.
Arthur Caplan, a leading medical ethicist in America, said, "If this family and child aren't on board with what's happening, no one wins."
The hospital said that the leukemia can be treated easily, but if it isn't treated with chemotherapy, she will die within a year. The Akron Children's Hospital wants limited guardianship of the girl by an attorney who is also a nurse. She will decide if Sarah should take chemotherapy, that is, by the judge's approval.
Leonard Glantz said, "People see this as a parent's rights issue, but we fail to see this is a child's rights issue."
Andy Hershberger, the young girl's father, said, "Our belief is, to a certain extent, we can use modern medicine, but at some times we have to stop it and do something else."
A judge ruled that Sarah's parents had the right to make her medical decisions. But an appeals court said that the judge didn't acknowledge if a assigning her a guardian would be in her best interest.
This article from the Associated Press is big news because it has to deal with a family's rights, a child's rights, and intervention of affairs by another (in this case, Akron Children's Hospital). The point of view in this article shows both sides of the story, but also shows that, even though Sarah's parents love her, they are putting her in very great danger by not letting the doctors give her chemotherapy. I, not knowing anything about this story before doing this assignment, find it important, because the parents have rights to treat their child's illness, but the child has rights too, and it's obvious that the parents' way of treating her disease is NOT in her best interest. The hospital is trying to keep her alive and well, because without their help, she will die of leukemia. This article, written for the public of the United Stated, raises many questions about citizens' rights. It's hard for many people to see this case eye to eye, and that's why the problem is raised.

Women In India - Max Gaddis
http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/27/opinion/gupta-india-rape-culture/index.html?iid=article_sidebar
Women in India are being raped and even though they are the victims, court is making them out to be the ones responsible for the incident. A reporter said that when she went to testify against the men who raped her, their lawyers asked her questions that made it seem like she was the one responsible for those men's actions, and the judge didn't stop them. She described it as "demoralizing" and a "toxic experience". There was another case where a woman of a low-caste (a caste is a way of organizing people by class. This woman would be "lower class" in America) was gang raped while protesting against child marriage ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_marriage_in_India ). The judge basically denied that this would ever happen in broad daylight and dismissed her case. That woman got no justice.
I honestly think this is the worst thing ever and this should be stopped in some way. Not by the US government (we've meddled too much all ready), but by the people of India (not just the women) and by the world.

Cheerios' Commercial - Max Gaddis
http://youtu.be/kYofm5d5Xdw
This Cheerio's commercial received a lot of negative feedback. It even got the comments disabled! Why? Because the parents are white and black and the child is mixed. This commercial was a good example of how racism still exist in the 21st century. Now, there are other examples. More violent examples.
http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/08/us/everyday-racism/index.html?vignette=5&hpt=us_bn2
All five stories deal with racism, and they are not all against blacks, as so many people wrongly think. Here is what some kids think of that Cheerio's commercial.
http://youtu.be/VifdBFp5pnw
CNN invites you to share your experiences with racism and remembering Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech by using the hash tag #everydayracism on Twitter (and I guess on Facebook now, too).
Now, I personally don't understand what the problem is, but most people seem to have a problem with this commercial while I, on the other hand, think it's cute. :D

Human statue By: Adrienne Healy
17 year old Seanie Nammock has been diagnosed with the rare disease FOP. This condition causes her muscles and tendons to harden and turn into bone when lightly tapped or touched. Nammock was diagnosed at age 12 when suffering a minor trampoline incident. Doctors were baffled to find the this your girl had a desise that has only affected 600 people in the world. Her arms have been completely locked up not allowing her to move her arms from her waist. Seanie has to face everyday with the fear of falling or being bummed into and turning into a complete statue.
What a poor girl. With such a rare Disease and no diagnosis I can't imagine how hard it is to live day by day not knowing if this is the last day you will be able to walk on your own or dance to some music. Props to her for not allowing this to stop her from living her life the way she attends.

North Carolina School Shooting By Savannah Boyack
Summary:
A shooting at Carver High School left one injured. Fortunately, they were not life-threatening wounds. Police state that they have a suspect in custody and that the rest of the school and student body were secured.
Analysis:
I think that school shootings are starting to become way to common. This was the most mild one I have seen so far and there are too many that i can compare it to. Everyone is saying that we need to increase gun control and school security to prevent this (which does need to be done) but why isn't anybody thinking about stopping this at the source? Why are these people walking into elementary, middle, and high schools to shoot innocent children and teens? Are they taking out their anger in this harsh way or have they simply gone mad? Why do these people think it was such a great idea to shoot kids?! Think about it and comment what you think about this situation.

Leftover Women - Max Gaddis
http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/18/world/asia/on-china-single-women-leta-hong-fincher/index.html?iid=article_sidebar
Women in China are rebelling against their families and "tradition" by not marrying. Women not married after the age of 27 are considered "old maids" in China. One woman claims that she is richer being single than she would be if she were married. Another says that men are still living in the old ways of China, but women have come away from that. But one's opinion is that only men benefit from marrying, not women. This opinion is in the minority of all the women in China, but it's getting to be a new trend. Another reason women don't want to get married is because of domestic violence against women. Even though women don't realize they are being abused, they will admit their husband hits them. China also does little to protect women's rights, so chinese women do not get the same divorce rights as american women, and stay-at-home mothers get even less. Also, women don't get the same share of home owners payments (although the court says that women are entitled to their share, but they don't keep the receipts). Many women are upset about these laws, but because of the way their government is set up, they can't really do anything about it. What do you think?
I think they are right to do so, because i really have no intentions of getting married also.

CURRENT EVENT: due Monday- September 2, 2013.
"President Obama: 'I Have Not Made a Decision' on Syria"
Summary:
Analyses:
I think that it is very thoughtful (if thoughtful is the correct word) of our President to try to protect a country in need. However, it has nothing to do with America; of course, there is the chance if we don't destroy them now, they could come attack America. Also, it shows the world "American Pride" and how much we try to protect our fellow countries. I believe that America should not be involved with a war that (at the moment) has nothing to do with them. Even if the president decides to enforce a mild attack, it could start a very unnecessary war.

Fast food strikes in the US by Julia Woltjen
By: Julia Woltjen
Today, Thursday August 29, was said to have been the largest fast food chain strike in history. Strikes are happening in dozens of cities including Boston, Memphis, Chicago, and even Houston. The workers for this mega enterprise are striking for higher hourly wages. Because the average fast food employee earns only $9.00/ hour that's barely enough to live off of!
ANALYZE: I think that what these workers are doing is good, because if you think that something isn't right than, you should do everything in your power to try and fix it. But I think that if I was one of those workers, I would just quit and go out for a better job. But for some people that isn't easy so this is what they have to do. I hope it works!
