Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in the past few years, has already hit part of Jamaica and is headed torwards Haiti. This fast-approaching Catagory Four storm could bring up to 40 inches of rain, and winds reaching up to 140mph according to the US National Hurricane Center. In Haiti, thousands of people are still living in tents as a result of the huge earthquake in 2010. Haitian officials stated that around 1,300 shelters have been built, able to accommodate roughly 340,000 people. Southern areas of Haiti are the areas expected to receive the most of the heavy rain and winds from Hurricane Matthew.
"Wherever that centre passes close to would see the worst winds and that's what's projected to happen for the western tip of Haiti," US hurricane specialist John Cangilosi said.
This storm could (and most likely will) uproot many Haitian families still gaining their footing after the 2010 earthquake. The damage hurricanes cause has been seen in past decades where hurricanes have destroyed whole cities. We can only hope that the same destruction does not plague Haiti, who has already sustained so much damage from six years ago.
