South Carolina Shooting Victim Dies at Age Six-Current Event #6- Victoria Gonzalez

On Wednesday, September 28, a school's playground in South Carolina was attacked when a fourteen-year-old opened fire on the school. Soon after the shooter attacked and was reported, first responders and parents came to the school in hopes of getting their children out of there as soon as possible. The suspect (who remains nameless due to being a minor) is also suspected to be the cause of his father's death, who was found in their home dead due to gunshot wounds. Luckily first responders had received extended training for such a scenario, and shortly after the gunman had reached the playground he was taken down by a volunteer firefighter. First responders were able to get to him before he had caused even more damage with only three casualties. However, even though   two casualties out of the three (two students and one teacher) were released from the hospital one student named Jacob Hall died due to a femoral artery, blood loss and a brain injury on Saturday, October 2. He was only six years old.
Words cannot express the devastation these families must feel as well as the terror. What's unacceptable is that not only the fact that yet another shooting has occurred, but that the actual gunman was only fourteen-years-old and somehow had access to a gun. Whether or not he got his hands on a gun from home is beyond me, but even if he did this only shows that keeping guns locked away in houses for emergencies is still dangerous. We are lucky and grateful for these trained and prepared first responders, but we cannot ignore the fact that gun control policies need to change.  Shootings like this are starting to become more frequent, and we're losing the lives of innocent people frequently and that needs to stop.

  1. It is so scary that someone so young can get access to guns. Schools are already taking so many safety precautions to prevent shootings and they still happen. Obviously its not the schools that need to do more about it, but there need to be more laws about gun control. This is such a sad thing to hear and my heart goes out to the victims families.

  2. I agree with Jessica, no one so young should have access to a gun. The gun control laws need to be more strict to prevent these events from happening. I can't believe a six year old was killed, that is awful.
