Recently Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz intentionally crashed Germanwings flight #9525 into the French Alps. He appears to have been on anti-depressants and had been in a bad breakup with a girl. This breakup was a stressor for him and caused him to act irrationally. He probably had stopped taking his pills for him to be in a bad state of mind and kill 149 people and himself. Lufthansa's official statement is that Lubitz was very thorough in keeping his illness a secret because they most likely wouldn't have let him fly the plane if they knew.
In my opinion this will force Lufthansa to improve its evaluations so that another person like Lubitz doesn't manage to pass psych evaluations even though he wasn't mentally stable. I can't imagine the pain the family members of the victims must be going through.
When I first heard about this event, I was in shock as well. It really was completely unanticipated and makes little sense. I agree that evaluations should be improved so that something like this doesn't happen to innocent people in the future.
