Kate Boyer-Turning Trash into Treasure

In 2009, a magazine distribution company decided they need to get rid of the waste they cause by designing a bunch of objects. Though this seems a small concept, the idea and the work is incredible. 14 women, most unemployed prior to this opportunity, work together to roll up strips of magazines and then dip them in paint as well as stitch them together with fabric. Their products are sold all over the world, and the international sales make up the majority of the income.
I think this is a really great idea because it is a great way to recycle and the jewelry is really pretty. This reminds me of the silk roads and the trading. These women have taken something they're good at and are making a profit off it.

  2. This is a great way to recycle unwanted magazines and to ultimately reduce waste in the world. Also these women were unemployed before, now they are able to make a living and support their families.
