December 2 in Kiev, Ukraine there were about five or six thousand protesters outside the building of the Ukraininan government, also blocking the entrances to the building of the National Bank of Ukraine, the Club of the government and the building of the Cabinet. They were demanding that the president, Viktor Yanukovych, resign and that the parliament and government be dissolved. Earlier, they had seized the City Hall and tried to storm the building of the presidential administration. At least 260 people (120 police officers, 112 protesters, and 28 journalists) have been injured in clashes with the police. The authorities are now contradicting rumours that they will use force again to quell the protests, also saying that tanks will be arriving in Kiev because of the coming state of emergency. These are the biggest protests Ukraine has seen since the Orange Revolution in 2004.
I'm not completely sure about what it going on with the Ukrainian president, or why people want him out of office, but I did see an article about how it doesn't seem that democracy is coming to Ukraine. I guess that former Soviet Union countries are still trying to achieve a stable government and economic system, and that will probably take more time to develop, since developed countries in Western Europe are still dealing with those kinds of issues. I wonder if you ever can achieve a "perfect" democracy, because most nations and empires eventually fall. Still, I hope that these protests are making progress, instead of just causing more trouble.
