Grace Biltz- Week 6 Post

It is really important to recycle your clothes. You may not realize how much work it takes to donate clothes directly to people, there are actually four stages that Goodwill (one of the biggest donation services in the U.S.) goes through.
Stage 1: Goodwill operates more than 3,000 clothing stores. The workers will sort the clothes depending on its condition. If an item didn't sell within four weeks, it would be sent to the next stage.
Stage 2: Clothes that weren't sold on the retail floor would be brought to Goodwill outlets like "Buy the Pound" outlet store or 99 cent Goodwill store. The prices were kept quite low in hopes something would be bought. Goodwill tries extra hard to keep clothing out of the landfills.
Stage 3: The items that are not sold at the outlets are then put in the Goodwill auctions. These are live events where the peoples in the audience would bid on bins of donated clothing. It could sell as low as $35.
Stage 4: If the clothes weren't sold in any of the three stages of the donation process, Goodwill would send them to textile recycling organizations. For example, S.M.A.R.T. is a trade organization that works on recycling textiles. Around 45% of clothing that makes it to S.M.A.R.T. is either put up again for sale or sent overseas to markets with higher demand.

We all have a responsibility to be environmentally aware and good citizens of the earth. Most people are aware of the need to recycle paper, plastic and metal. However, we also need to be aware of the importance of recycling clothes. It helps other people and the environment.

A teenager in South Carolina shoots at a playground at an elementary school. The teen began shooting after he walked out of his car and began walking toward the playground. Several of the teachers began to gather the children and guide them to the school. The shooter was later tackled by a firefighter and was put in custody. In the end, three people were wounded: a teacher and two students.

This incident was handled very well by the teachers. You always hear about children getting killed in school shootings, but luckily, the teachers followed protocol and saved so many lives that day.

A shooting took place at Townville S.C, there an armed guy (14 years old) injured two 6 year old boys along with a teacher. Before he entered the school he shot and killed his father. The school was saved from any more a harm by a firefighter. Brock (firefighter) did not use fire arms or weapons to stop the shooter. The boy was not a student at the school but rather home-schooled. Thankfully though, not many were harmed, and those who were, received immediate medical care.

Teen suspended for taking a picture of the school's dirty water by Ashley Mendoza

In Michigan, a school teen got suspended, for three days, for taking a picture of the school's dirty water and posting it to Twitter. Apparently, she was suspended for inappropriate use of electronics in the restroom, which she claims,"  Every girl takes selfies in the bathroom and makes it their profile pictures. No one has gotten in trouble."Her friends decided to do the same, and the superintendent  finally decided to take action by making sure the suspension is not on her record.
I believe what they did to her was wrong. The picture was taken too seriously and the school board should have taken a more professional aproach.

Young Muslim Women Making A Difference

Young Muslim women are finding a way to combine their faith and their social media accounts.  Muslim woman are increasingly expressing themselves, their style and showing it to the world while maintaining their modesty and Islamic values.  Photographer, Elin Berge, is capturing this subject in her series, "Hijabistas."  These women are wearng ther hijabs differently and making fashion statements. with them.  The young muslim women are being more expressive and less fearful.  They are finding freedom with fashion.

In today's society, Muslims are often feared and are not understood by many people.  With the image of Islam tattered, it is important that Americans see these women in an effort to understand.  The young women are role models in upholding their faith and culture.  They could quite possibly change the way many Americans view Muslims in a positive way.

NASA Spots What May Be Plumes of Water on the Surface of One of Jupiter's Moons Europa.

captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA has discovered what may be plumes of water on Europa. They used Hubble to capture the silhouette of this moon while it was moving across Jupiter's bright surface. this is really interesting considering that scientists have been looking for other places beyond Earth that can support life. Congress has ordered NASA to launch a mission to Europa no later that 2022 to take observations.

I liked this article. It tells a lot about there findings of what may be these plumes. I's very exciting seeing this.

Transgender restrooms

Yari Collins

A federal judge in Columbus, Ohio allows transgender students to use the girls restroom. Highland Local schools don't like the idea but they can't give a good/ reasonable argument as to why they shouldn't. The schools have encountered this problem for months ever since the law passed.

I think they should be able too use the restroom where they want. If they want to be a female let them. Who am I to judge. I think the school system is wrong for not agreeing with the law. Most schools want you to be true to yourself but this is an example of them going back on their word.

World's Youngest Airline Captain - Mila Fisher

A british woman at the age of 26 has become one of the youngest commercial airline captains in the world. She says many passengers and crew ask about her age and are "pleasantly suprised and impressed" when she tells them.
Kate McWilliams began flying in the air cadets at the age of 13, until her 19th birthday, when she went on a training program at CTC Aviation in Southampton. After that, she joined easyJet as a first officer in May 2011, and then recently, after passing the command course, she rose to the rank of captain. McWilliams said this on the subject:
“Personally, I don’t think my age matters. I’ve been through the same training and passed the same command course as every other captain, so I’ve proven myself capable regardless of my age. I do now get asked how old I am on an almost daily basis, which didn’t used to happen when I was a first officer.”
McWilliam's accomplishments have laid the path for many youth thinking they're not talented or old enough to succeed, and she has shown us all that hard work and perseverance pays off in the end, especially if it's doing what you love.

First Presidential Debate-Current Event #5- Victoria Gonzalez

After slowly building up all the anticipation and barely holding onto what little patience we had left, the entire country was left astounded after seeing the First Presidential Debate for the 2016 election. With approximately the same amount of viewers as the Super Bowl, never before had such a Presidential Debate been so anticipated since the 2012 election with Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. However, after this debate many were astounded by seeing Clinton's preparation, thought, time and effort put into every answer. Meanwhile, Trump did what he does best, attempting to talk his way out of difficult situations.
Not only did he often claim statements like "climate control was created for and by the Chinese" to not have been said by Trump (which were clearly shown in tweets and interviews), but he often interrupted Clinton during her answers with obnoxious statements. Even when asked specific questions, he simply answered it with a statement that didn't even answer the original question. But despite both answers from both nominees, it was Clinton who ended on top with winning poll results and 62% of the audience saying she won compared to 27% saying the victory was Trump's.

9/26/16 Death of Pitcher ~ Jose Fernandez - Theresa Dvorocsik

Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández, who defected from Cuba at 15 and went on to become one of the baseball's brightest stars, was killed early Sunday in a boating accident. Fernández, who was 24, and two other men were found dead after their boat was discovered at the entrance of Miami Harbor. Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the accident,  but investigators had been unable to get under the overturned wreckage. Autopsies have not been conducted. None of the three victims was wearing a life vest. But his story is about more than baseball accolades, and Mattingly certainly isn't the only person to shed tears over Fernández's death. The oft-smiling Fernández had many friends in the game, owing to his cheerful demeanor and fierce competitiveness. He also owned what Miami Herald sportswriter Dan Le Batard once called a "rags to pitches" story that many, especially those in Florida's Cuban-American communities, found inspiring.

This is very devastating and touches so many. He was such an inspiration to so many and it is so difficult to read about people like this dying.

"Charlotte police shooting: Family says video is unclear" -Ellen Whitehead

Last Tuesday, Keith Lamont Scott may have been innocently killed. The police officers claim that Mr. Scott pointed a gun at them, causing them to shoot him. However, Mr. Scott's family have viewed the surveillance footage and claim that he did not only not have a gun in his hand, but that he never owned a gun. The mayor is still debating wether or not to release the video to the public, but she too is unsure on the scenario. I feel that this story is very concerning because it is important to know whether this man deserved to be killed or he was innocent. I feel that if the police officers had mistaken that they should admit it rather than go through all this trouble, and the family deserves to know. I hope that they can resolve this case because it is important information to know.

Water Plumes on Europa - Miles Shickman

One of Jupiter's moons, Europa, has been getting attention from alien enthusiasts for years, since it has late oceans underneath layers of ice. This has led NASA to plan a mission to Europa involving complicated machinery to dig holes and collect water samples. As we found out recently, that might not be necessary. In 2012, an eruption of water was sighted coming out of the surface. Like all discoveries, however, we needed to double check and verify. No further evidence was found until we recently analyzes pictures taken in 2014 by the Hubble Telescope that showed more plumes. This significantly changes NASA's Europa program, set to launch in 2020. Who knows? Maybe we will find someone out there after all.

Nazi emblems were found among the "personal effects" of the man who was killed in Houston Monday after wounding nine people in a mass shooting. The shooter was dressed in some kind of military uniform and had Nazi emblems with him and at his house. The Bellaire Police Department and West University Police Department also responded with Houston police to the report of an active shooter in a neighborhood strip mall in the affluent neighborhood of West University Place at 6:30 a.m. He came in with a gunshot to the policemen in the mall with motives that aren't clear at this moment.

He was a normal lawyer who just one day snapped. I first of all don't understand why he had a gun in the first place. Secondly, I don't know if the nazi emblems have anything to do with the shooting, but anyone that is pro-nazi in my opinion is messed up. I would love to know his motives and I really am concerned with the gun control law and all of these different shootings are making going place a scary event. They should lock him up in a mental facility.

Philae was sent into space two years ago by the European Space Agency (ESA) to land on a comet, and just recently, they received photos of the location of Philae;although, it was in a crack of the comet it was supposed to land on.
I personally LOVE the idea of space exploration. The idea of infinite darkness full of blazing stars, explosions of color clouds (nebulae), hungry black holes, and much more just intrigues me. The only thing I hate about it is the fact that it takes forever. For instance, it took Philae two years to land on a comet. If only there was a way to speed up the process.

A teenager, the age of 16 shot and murderd his parents in Frisco two years ago. He will be sentenced to life in prison and must serve 30 years until patrol. He shot his father, Ryan callens two times and shot his mother, Maria Caleb's in her bed seven times.

Analysis
I believe that this young man was simply not thinking. I bet that he did this act caused by being the youngest boy in his family and he left he didn't get enough attention. Or he could've been depressed. But this crime had to come from something. And I bet that right now he's probably crying like a baby Bc his siblings hate and there's no one he can lean on. I am glad this boy is going to prison for life, he deserves it.

A man found with nazi emblems in his clothes was killed after wounding 9 people in a shooting. Over 75 bullet shells were found at the scene and the gunman had 2600 rounds of ammo. The motive is still unclear but "At this point we are very open minded..."

This is terrible because first of all, shootings are a tragedy but luckily no one died besides the shooter. second of all, its almost embarrassing to texas and anywhere else it could occur that people still advertise nazis ( and even though its unrelated to the article, the confederate flag and kkk often coincide with modern day southern nazis)

Aeva Ramirez, law against Confederate flag

Recently Obama has passed a law saying it is illegal to manufacture and sell any item with or relating to the confederate flag as well as possessing one. If you do, you shall be properly punished through the government, for it is an actual law, and should not be treated as a joke. Obama says it it is a major victory against racism and brings us more together as a country.

I completely agree with this law. I feel that there is no reason to keep around something that represents the old segregated and unfair ways of America. We are all humans and and the color of our skin does  not change that. It should still be taught in education because it is our history,  but has no place in the present time. I am ashamed that we treated people like products. I realize that, that was how people were raised to think at the time but that is no excuse, people are people and should always be treated as such.

As we all know, the famous new iPhone 7 came out recently. What also came out recently as well is the Apple earphones which are called Airpods. They are different from the earbuds because they are wireless. But once everyone found out about the wireless head phones they all started to worry that they might loose them and to replace them you would have to pay $159. So a company named Spiegen created the Istring which holds the two earbuds together so that you don't loose them. But the best part about the Istring is that it is only $10!
I think this is a brilliant idea because it cheaper and it causes less stress on making sure you have the Airpods. Hopeful the shipping will become quicker because right now if you order them today you won't get them until next month. What do you think about the Airpods and the Istring?

Chantel Washington: Tawan Boyd death after police scuffle

ok so a guy name Tawan Boyd died in the hospital after a fight with many officers. Apparently he called the police while he was arguing with his girlfriend i believe. When the police came they said he was acting crazy and paranoid. To make a long story short Boyd ended up being punched multiple times and pinned to the ground by all the officers after getting wild and trying to fight the police. by the time the paramedics came to give him calming medication he was still acting wild but severely injured. They are sill trying to figure out if that caused his death.

Im gonna try to keep my opinion on this as short as possible. I can see why they did what the did to Boyd but if there were multiple of them and only one of him then why did they have to do all that. The guy probably had mental issues and just needed help. Honestly i dont think they should have done that because Boyds grandma was watching and he has a 3 year old daughter. "Boyd had seemed to be no threat to the officers and it was pretty obvious that he had menal issues and should have been treated that way"

In Palmers life he won more than 90 Golf tournaments including the Masters four times as well as the US Open and the British Open.He became the first person to make $1 million dollars by playing golf. From learning to play the game at age four, Palmer continued playing for the rest of his life. He not only had the skills to pay the bills but he had great charisma and style that earned him spots in GQ magazines "50 most stylish men in the past 50 years" and Esquires "75 best-dressed men of all time". Not only that but Arnold Palmer had a drink named after him which is a half-lemonade half-iced tea mix that he would drink on the courses in a thermos. Arnold Palmer, a golf legend, will be forever remembered.

I was very upset when i saw this headline while looking for my current event this week because Arnold Palmer is such an important figure to the sport of golf. Dick Buckingham, the administrative leader, said the following trying to defend his case " that they are doing this on a religious perspective that guys and girls were created differently, this difference is physical, they Want to teach the boys that there honor is not in sports".

Foothill at first in the past had played one game without the girls in it after another skill had threatened to forfit, this time the team refused to play without the girls on their side. The girls said that they were proud to be on the team, and that they were happy to be included.

Ward and Eloise Hill met in college. It all started with a handshake. But now, they hold hands, trying to ward of Alzheimer's together. They are close to losing memory of 68 years together.

Ward was diagnosed with the disease about two years ago and Eloise sometime after. The interviewer came to visit them many times, many a times Ward and Eloise would scarcely remember. The interviewer found herself repeating conversations she had had with the couple multiple times.

Eloise told stories of Ward and of how much she loved him. It was love at first sight. They created a bond that was unbreakable, even unbreakable to Alzheimer's.

I found this absolutely beautiful. My grandmother has Alzheimer's and it means a lot to me and hits close to home.

More than 1/3 of VA calls to suicide hotline aren't answered, Amy Mills

From recent investigations, more than a third of veteran suicide calls aren't answered. Greg Hughes, the director of the suicide hotline, said, "Some hotline workers can't handle more than 5 calls a day and leave before their shifts end." He also stated that "[The staff] spend very little time on the phone or engaged in assigned productive activity." This is understandable, but statistics have shown that around 20 veterans commit suicide everyday.

I understand that it might be hard to work for a suicide hotline because I think it would be terrible for people to call you, begging for help, pleading for you to save their lives. On the other hand, suicide is a very serious problem among veterans (or anyone), and we need all the help we can get to save people.

Kate Boyer-Jerusalem needs more space to bury their dead

Right now there is a cemetery in Jerusalem that has over 200,000 graves and almost every single one is full. The cemetery has graves in the ground outside and also in a 3-story building, and they still need more space. Architects have already begun working on the project. There is going to be an underground graveyard with enough space for approximately 22,000 dead people and will end up costing around $50 million. People will have to follow ancient traditions when they bury their dead. Instead of putting the corpse in a coffin, they will be placed directly a stone platform. Underground burial grounds have been around since B.C.E. and are still used to day, an example being The Catacombs in Paris. The architects behind the design are hoping to bring back the nearly extinct traditions. This project is a temporary solution and will take roughly 5 years to complete.
I think this is a great solution, but I'm curious as to what they will do after all of the new spots are filled up.

North Korea is under suspicious watch after they began rocket launch testing. The North Koreans claim they are building rockets to eventually go to the moon. However, they are under investigation because authorities believe they may use it as a nuclear weapon to target New York and Washington. It is also now known that two Iranian engineers went to North Korea to help build a rocket booster. Because of this people believe North Korea may be working with Iran. In my opinion this could turn out to be a very big issue. Why would they now be interested in traveling to the moon after decades of people doing it before them. The time for that is over. It is very likely they will try to send the rocket to do harm, so we need to investigate and prepare in the five years before the estimated launch.

Gun Control Laws

September 26th
Olivia Martin

Recently, the issue of gun control in our country has become prevalent, especially because of the incidents with gun violence. Democrats are determined in particular to make this the year that we end and prevent gun tragedies. A concert series in 350 different US cities is promoting gun control laws, and to end the violence. The concerts, which occurred yesterday, were advocating positivity and remembrance to those who died due to gun violence.

There's no reason to neglect this problem within out country anymore. Gun violence has even occurred in our city, so we shouldn't just stand by. I don't understand how even through everything that's happened, especially in Orlando, that people just don't mind that almost anyone can own a gun.  I'm really glad that people support this act and spread peace and positivity through music. I think that's a great way to send the message. I hope we can end this violence in our country.

On Monday(today), a gunman in Houston shot 9 people near a mall before he was killed. He was first seen wearing a Nazi military uniform around 6:30 am. The gunman was armed with 2 guns and some sort of knife. Reports say he was shooting into windshields and at people. He was taken down shortly after a shoot-off with police. Of course, this is a really tragic incident and is especially sad for the families of the victims. Many people will dispute over the gun laws and whether people should have them or not. After so many years of being able to have guns most don't want to change and will be hard to convince to give up their guns. Before anyone completely takes away guns, they maybe should make the process of getting one harder, and possibly prevent events like this from happening. Then eventually it should nearly impossible to get one, like in most European countries where gun control isn't a problem.

A power plant located in Puerto Rico caught on fire leaving approximately 1.5 million people without power. A 2,00 gallon tank of mineral oil exploded after a power switch overheated. The fire spread 3 acres before firefighters were able to contain it. Power was restored to about 130,000 within 12 hours but it left roughly 1/3 of the population in the dark. The fire not only caused a severe power outage, it also caused 340,000 people to be without water after the water service was shut off. A lot of schools have canceled classes and Jobs have shortened the work hours.
I'm surprised so many people were affected and hope the people can get back on their feet soon.

holden daniels post: Houston gunman wore Nazi emblems and had two weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition

http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-houston-mall-shooting-20160926-snap-story.html

a disgruntled lawyer had two weapons and more than 2,500 rounds of live ammunition when he randomly shot at drivers in a Houston neighborhood Monday morning, hitting six people, before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said. Another three people had injuries from glass or debris.
The gunman was wearing military-style apparel with old Nazi emblems during the shootings, Houston homicide Capt. Dwayne Ready said at a news conference. Vintage military items dating to the Civil War and other guns were found in the man's apartment.
Analysis: i think that this is very said and everything but i think he probably had a mental illness because of this and also thank god no one was killed.

TEXAS LAWYER IN NAZI UNIFORM SHOOTS UP STRIP MALL!
At 6:30 shots were fired. later the dude hid behind a tree shooting at cops. The attacker was eventually killed and six people were sent to the hospital. People can be really stupid and still have jobs like being a lawyer and I want to know when do they take people out of there jobs? People that are so out of touch should not have an opinion that decides someones sentence.

recalling samsung note 7- Valerie Garcia (current event #5)

On the 15th of September they officially started to recall Samsung note 7's. They were recalling them because the phones would over heat and catch fire when charging. 26 reports of people that got burned and 55 reports of property damage due to the fire.

I'am glad they are recalling the phone because there shouldn't need to be more people getting burned by the phones. I don't think they have said why the phones were over heating and catching fire but i really think they should. Personally i would want to know why my phone would be over heating and or catching fire.

Doctors may have discovered an interesting way to get rid of kidney stones. Several riders on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disney World had reported passing kidney stones after they went on the ride. One man said that his kidney stone passed after riding the ride 3 consecutive times.

Even though it is an unconventional way for kidney stones to pass, this could be a breakthrough in medicine. If rollercoaster-like movements help get rid of kidney stones, doctors could help patients with kidney stones by using movement. This article was probably written to let people know about this interesting theory. This could also even save people with kidney stones a trip to the doctor- they can just go to Disney world! (Not really)

An angry lawyer starts shooting at a Houston southwest shopping center on Monday September 26, 2016. He injured 9 people until the police came and shot him dead. His name was Nathaniel DeSai a lawyer who worked and McDaniel and DeSai LLP. DeSai's father told ABC13 that his son was upset of a law firm and lack of clients causing the business to close. He owned many guns with a license for them and drove a black Porsche that was examined in the shopping center previously by the police. The reason for his actions was the fact that he was angry over his business so he took it out on other people.

Over and over this happens and these crazy people in the world don't know how to deal with their anger or sadness so they endanger other people and it's really not okay. I'm pretty sure there have been hundreds of articles in the news about shootings and murders, and it just happens time after time. I think that since it happens often people are just starting to let it go which needs to change.

MLB pitcher dies - Lauren Rothert

Jose Fernandez, Miami Marlins pitcher, died early Sunday morning. Fernandez was having a great year, after coming back from elbow surgery in 2015. His death was caused by a boating accident, the 24 year old was found in an overturned boat with two other men. It seems that the boat hit a large group of rocks, also called a jetty. Sources have not yet confirmed the cause of the accident.

Although the cause of the accident has not been concluded, it was predicted that the boat was going full speed (around 50-65 mph). Since the crash was right around the entrance of the harbor, the boat should not have been going that fast, in my opinion. I have many questions regarding this incident. Was the captain of the boat experienced with the area? Was alcohol involved? Why weren't the passengers wearing life vests? It is likely that the occupants hit the rocks when ejected from the boat, so a life vest may not have helped, but it still needs to be addressed. The accident was reported around 3:15 am, therefore it was dark outside. With reduced visibility, due to darkness, it seems that the boat should have been travelling less than the speed reported. Autopsies of the bodies have not been conducted, so there is no telling if alcohol was involved, but I believe it is likely. There are many possibilities that could have caused this accident. Jose Fernandez was an amazing baseball player who will be missed.

Fuel Tanker Continues to burn off Mexico's Gulf Coast- Hannah Niara

On Saturday September 24, a mexican ship loaded with gasoline blew into flames. People from the Port of Veracruz could see the burning ship. The ship was anchored about seven miles from the coast. At 11:13 a.m. on Saturday morning the people running the ship called for help. A couple minutes later a few firefighter ships came. They rescued all of the people who were on the boat and they all made it out safely with no injuries. As of putting out the fire none of it really helped or solved any of the problem. Mexico's environmental protection agency said that a mile of containment booms were set out to keep the fuel away from reaching the coast. Unfortunately the fire is still going on today, but hopefully it will be put out soon.

Current Events: Bagdad Bombings
Today there have been a total of three attacks in Baghdad, killing a total of 8 people, and wounding 25. ISIS took ownership in the most deadly attack of the day, which was a suicide bombing that killed 6 people and wounded at least 18. The bomber had an explosive belt and set it off in the Iskan city area in western Baghdad. Some Shia pilgrims were setting up a tent for the holy month of Muharram when the bomber struck. The attack was targeting Shia militia members.
Every day in the news you see articles about terrorism attacks, usually involving ISIS. It’s just so strange to me how someone’s beliefs can be so strong and intense that they can drive them to commit suicide and take down six other people with them. Religion is usually associated with peace and when I here all of these stories about terrorism it breaks my heart.  I hope that someday terrorism will lose its point to those who believe in it so not so many people will have to die.

17 year old girl missing/at risk- Melanie Escalante

After 911 received a call from a child at a California residence that her parents were dead, 911 went to the scene to find 2 dead men and a women. Without injury, two children were also found. A resource told the OC register that the couple had 3 children- 2 between the age of 7/9 and one teenager. The teenager, Katlynn Goodwill, was not seen at the residence which leads officials to believe that she is missing and in danger. The search has extended out to the rest of the community since officials could not locate her within a day.
We don't know what exactly happened which makes the case harder to solve. Whatever the case may be, I still worry about this girl who isn't safe right now. I pray that these kids stick together after experiencing something no child should experience. I hope they find Katlynn and bring her home safely to her siblings.

4 Year Old Boy found dead in a closed public pool

Police think that the 4 year old  may have entered through a hole in the fence. It's still being investigated. The little boy was at park with his family, and by 7 pm there was a missing child's report on him. The call was made by a person who was helping search for the boy. They found the child's body around 9:30 pm at the Bear Creek Pool. The pool has been closed, and shut down for about a good 3 years now.

McIntosh has said that the investigation is still ongoing. Now I'm wondering if this is the city of Grande Prairie's fault. Could they have prevented this from happening. I think they should have been checking in on that place from time to time. Its been shut down for almost about a good 3 years now, which is plenty of time to have reconstructed the place. And better yet, why was there water still in the pool? Is anyone responsible for this? And i question where the boys parents were and he was out of sight to them.

All we can do is give condolences to the family and pray that they are okay. Rest in Peace to the little four year old, who has not even been able to experience life yet.

Grace Biltz - Week 5 Post

Over 2,000 years ago, a ship sank off the coast of Greece near the island of Antikythera in the Aegean Sea. The "Antikythera shipwreck" is the longest ancient shipwreck ever discovered. Sponge divers first found the wreck in 1900 and since then a huge amount of artifacts have been recovered. They include glassware, jewelry, statues, and weapons and the Antikythera Mechanism (used to predict celestial events).

In August, researchers had an "incredible" discovery. They recovered a partial skull, teeth, arm, leg and rib bones from the shipwreck. The researchers believe that it is the skeleton of a passenger or crew member that was trapped in the ship when it sank. Through DNA testing, they will be able to determine the skeleton's gender and ethnicity.

The discovery of these bones along with all the other artifacts will provide insight into the day to day lives and culture of people from 2,000 years ago. I believe this is important for our understanding of the history about this shipwreck.

Analysis: It's very sad to know that the world still hasn't gotten their head together. This article was released by BBC on September 22, 2016. This must've been very sad Keith Lamont Scott's family. So sad to know that he is the third black man killed by US police in a week.

Summary: On September 22, 2016 an announcement was released to the public, and published on this news article. North Carolina's governor himself declared a state of emergency in the city of Charlotte. After this event, there was a huge protest and the police officers had to arrest 44 people.

New technology allows us to read charred Dead Sea scroll -miles Shickman

Almost 50 years ago, we found a charred scroll by the Dead Sea. We have been unable to open or read it, we have just been able to conserve it and wait. However, the University of Kentucky recently finished a program that allowed them to digitally unfurl nod enhance it so that we could read it. We discovered that the scroll was around 2,000 years old, and that it is identical to parts of the boom of Leviticus from the Torah. I think the author wrote it to show how far technology has come and how old the exact text of the Torah used today may be.

Farmer Enlists Chickens and Bugs to Battle Against Pests

Gary Weing and his wife bought forty acres of land to grow organic vegetables. But the land was covered in insects and weeds. In order to avoid using pesticides that could harm the organic stuff, he made a new cheap system for his benefit. He planted "trap crops" which lured in the pesky insects. Then with a chicken tractor, he had the chickens feast on them. Not only did this allow him to save the environment, but it was also cheaper since he was using his resources instead of buying products for the store.
I enjoyed this article a lot. Many people could benefit reading this, especially if you own a garden and some chickens. Gary Weing was smart in using his resources for his problem instead of buying pesticides from the store.

USA and China Working Together ~By Victoria Valdez

President Barack Obama and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang have come to an agreement step up their cooperation in the United Nations Security Council after North Korea set up its fifth nuclear test.  They are also targeting Hongxiang Industrial who they suspect assists North Korea's nuclear program.

The police in Liaoning has started an investigation into Hongxiang Industrial's involvement of serious crimes over a long period of time.  Chinese authorities have frozen assets as a result of the investigation.

Obama and Li have discussed the importance of a U.S.-China economic relationship within the global economy.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-nuclear-usa-china-idUSKCN11P2D0

A good economic relationship between the United States and China is very important especially in light of North Korea's fifth nuclear test.  The global economy would become stronger if the U.S. and China became allies and fought crime together.

Empires have been created throughout world history.  In order for the bigger empires to survive, they must watch and keep an eye on the smaller ones so they cannot corrupt the economy.  It's kind of like Israel and Syria.

Animal Death Controversy - Lauren Rothert

On Friday, a brand new baby giraffe was born at the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark. The birth was live streamed all over the world, and celebrations arose as everyone watched. We all fell in love with the baby instantly, but there are a few concerns about the giraffe's well being at the zoo. Only two years ago, a baby giraffe named Marius was killed at age two, at the same zoo. The veterinarians stated that Marius was a surplus animal, meaning that his genes were close to others in the zoo population. Unfortunately, Marius was not the only young animal that was killed at the Copenhagen Zoo. In 2012, the zoo killed a family of four lions, and two leopard cubs! Bengt Holst, the zoo director, claims that the zoo kills a total of 20 to 30 animals per year in order to keep the populations steady.

In my opinion, I believe that if the animals proposed a problem at the zoo, they should be transferred to a nearby zoo. There are many zoos in the world that would love to take in more animals. Rather than killing the harmless babies, the Copenhagen Zoo should look around for more options. The killing of these animals makes me question the responsibility and mind set of the caretakers at this zoo. The transferring of animals could be more successful, because it would give the babies an opportunity to mate. Since transferred animals would be new to the zoo, there would not be a problem with the genes of two animals.

9/19/16 Self-Driving Cars on the Road - Theresa Dvorocsik

http://time.com/4500687/self-driving-cars-white-house-department-of-transportation/?xid=homepage

This article is about the future of self-driven cars and the Federal Government's stance on it.
Last week, Uber began offering free rides in self-driving cars to customers in Pittsburgh. This mad it the the first company in the U.S. to offer use of the vehicles to the public. Do not worry, the cars have a person sitting in the driver’s seat ready to handle situations beyond the abilities of the computer.
The Federal Government believes that they should be in charge of regulating self-driving cars - not the states - since the vehicles are now turning into computers instead of people. Automakers should also be allowed to self-certify the safety of autonomous vehicles while following a 15-point list of targets for safe design, development, testing and deployment.
I think this is very interesting to me. I just got my learners permit and in about a year I hope to get my drivers license. I believe that my generation is the last to have cars driven by people. This is very exciting, and should plummet the number of cars wrecks every year.

As we all know the famous London Fashion week happened this past Monday. And as usual it was amazing, but this year was considered one of the best years because of the new technology. Meaning, this year they created a way for all the clothes, bags, and shoes that were seen walk down the run way be able to be sold online or in store. In the years past this show was a little preview of what the collection would be that would be coming out. This new way of buying the product right when you see it was such a big deal because normally you would see the collection but it wouldn't come out for months later.
I think this is a huge thing that all designers should start doing because I think it would bring in a whole lot more money. Also I just really think it is cool that now what you are seeing for the first time on tv could be yours that same minute by just ordering it online or even going to the store and the new collection being there. What do you think about this new way of technology in fashion?

France Bands Plastic Cups and Plates
By Madeline Cedillo

France has declared that starting 2020, the Plastic Cups and Plates will be banded. They want to be the role model for the rest of the of the countries. This new French law will require " all disposable tableware to be made from 50% biologically-sourced materials that can be composted at home by January of 2020. That number will rise to 60% by January of 2025."

This is also a law that falls under the " Enery Transition for Green Growth Act" that is important there. 4.73 billion cups are thrown away each year of which only 1% gets recycled. This movment will help a lot for the generations to come and have a better place to live.

I think that this is a great movement for the conservation of the earth for future generations to come and will help keep the outsides nice and safe.

"Chelsea Bombing: What We Know and Don't Know" -Ellen Whitehead

Last Saturday, there were bombings in New Jersey and New York. The first one was near a charity race on the Jersey Shore. The second one was almost 12 hours later in front of 131 West 23rd Street in Chelsea. A couple hours later, a third device was found on West 27th Street between Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue. The next morning, a backpack containing five explosion devices was found on top of a trash can in a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This backpack was only half a mile away from Ahmad Khan Rahami's living area. Ahmad Khan Rahami was arrested last week for having some kind of connection to the bombings. Mr. Rahami was originally from Afghanistan, but is now a U.S. citizen and has previously faced jail time. He was found asleep in a doorway of a bar when the police were called. He fought back and was shot several times. He was charge included five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and also two other counts.

I think that it is terrible how bombings are stilling happening. I feel that our society should have a better security to where things like this don't happen as often as they are. I am glad that the police found a connection to the source of the bombing, however there could and is most likely more people involved. I hope that in the future people are more careful and safe to where events such as this one don't happen so often.

A convoy of aid trucks has been hit by an air strike near the Syrian city of Aleppo. Reports say, hours after the military declared the current cessation of violence was over. One unconfirmed report said 12 people were killed in the attack near the town of Urm al-Kubra. A UN spokesman said at least 18 of 31 trucks had been hit but could not confirm it was by an air strike. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said it was an "outrage". "The convoy was the outcome of a long process of permission and preparations to assist isolated civilians," he said in a statement emailed to Reuters. The Syrian Red Crescent said the convoy had been making a routine delivery from Aleppo to rural rebel-held areas. Images posted online showed what appeared to be aid lorries engulfed by flames. Activist group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said 12 people - aid workers and truck drivers - had died. The Syrian government has not commented. Mr de Mistura's humanitarian adviser, Jan Egeland, said the convoy had been "bombarded" while offloading at warehouses. About 78,000 people are in need of aid around Urm al-Kubra.

In my opinion this is all so bizarre. Especially, the part where they make it clear that the violence stopped HOURS AFTER the military declared the current cessation. The world has SO MUCH violence in it now and people need to chill. Why can't we go back to the 70's where people were just living life and minding their own business? Anyway, I just think this situation is all very bizarre and very unnecessary.

This week the brand new iPhone 7 was announced which you've probably already heard about but there is another 7 in the tech world that I want to talk about today.  This the Samsung galaxy note 7. The Note 7 was met rave reviews when it launched last month but in the past few weeks a problem has emerged.  The Note 7 phones are exploding!  This is no joke, there have been several incidents of the battery exploding in people's Note 7's.  Now this story came out last week but I'm writing about it today because the government has officially ordered a recall of all Note 7 phones.  This is no longer Samsung trying to fix the problem now the U.S. government has taken control of the situation.

I find this very concerning because we really so heavily on our electronic devices so the last thing we need is then blowing us up.  I also think this is why we should stop expecting technology componies to release new phones every year.  Think about how hard of a challenge that actually is.  If company's took more time to perfect their products things like this wouldn't happen.

Schoolchildren involved in Brawl by Ashley Mendoza

In Northumberland Heath in Bexley London (southeast), a huge fight broke out between about 100 children(wearing school uniforms). Two people were rushed to the hospital and six were arrested and taken into custody.
In my opinion, the thought of a huge group of kids just fighting( the reason is unknown/not specified) is ridiculous and in their school uniforms no less. No matter the reason they shouldn't have taken this course of action and now they have to pay the consequences.

Greek Migrants Flee Burning Camp - Mila Fisher

Migrants were evacuated from Moria, a refugee camp on Lesbos, a Greek island. Around 4000 were evacuated, and luckily no injuries were reported. Now some migrants are being allowed to return to the camp, even though the fire destroyed 30% of the camp, so many lost their shelter.
The officials investigating the fire believe that it was deliberately started, but an aid worker said it started after a food dispute. A brawl broke out on Monday, the cause being a rumor stating that refugees were going to deported to Turkey as a group. Many voiced that they were afraid to return to Turkey and their homeland.
The situation on Lesbos continues to get worse as more migrants arrive and wait for their asylum claim to be processed. Only some are granted asylum and get to travel to the Greek mainland, while others are turned away.
This is a situation that could be assuaged by more aid and help from organizations and countries.
These kind of crisises are created by war and battle, and to truly solve these type of problems is peace. Each small step can count as big one, if people care and truly try.

Sixth Extinction

September 19
Olivia Martin

Marine life is going extinct at an alarming rate, and scientists have noticed a certain pattern to this extinction, unlike previous ones. The organisms that are being targeted are only the larger ones; sharks, whales, sea turtles, giant clams, or tuna. With the top predators of the population dropping, the whole ecosystem is being thrown off balance. When one portion dies out, others will rapidly grow and take over. Scientists observed that the cause of the extinction can't be human-driven or a truly of climate change. If it was, there would be a more even distribution of extinction.

There's no sure cause of the decline in population yet. But it's our job to protect our oceans and keep the amazing marine life thriving. Oceans are constantly being threatened by over-fishing and pollution. I hope scientists can figure out what's causing this mass extinction. Not only will it destroy aquatic ecosystems, but part of nature's beauty will be gone.

bomber was found - Jade Pierre

A man that was linked to New York and New Jersey bombings where caught today. The 28 year old Ahmad Khan Rahami was charged with 5 counts of attempted murder of an officer. He was also charged with second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was found at a bar the owner found him sleeping in the door way. Once he recognized the man he called the police. Ahmad started to open fire and he was shot multiple times.
I personally never understood the mind set of extremist. Why would they want to hurt people? I believe that this is wrong that they are harming people that have done absolutely nothing to them!!! I also think that its sad that now people think that all Muslims are bad when only 2%  of Muslims are extremist. The Muslim religion is actually very peaceful.

Elle Holland Current Event #4

My article for this week focuses on something very close to heart.... food. More specifically waffles, Eggo waffles have been recalled in 25 states because they are contaminated with the bacteria listeria announced by Kellogg Co. as of Monday. The Eggo Whole Wheat Waffles are the effected product but it is the only Eggo product that was affected. Listeria can cause harm to children, elders, or any weak immune system. Symptoms that are caused by the bacteria include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, pain in the abdominal or diarrhea. It can also be very harmful to pregnant women. The infection when in your system spreads around your body and can be as severe as causing death. This is not the first problem Kelloggs Eggo brand has faced, In 2009 traces of Listeria were found in the buttermilk waffles and in 2010 the FDA sent a letter to the company questioning it's safety standards.

This reminds me of the recall that happened last year on Blue Bell Ice Cream. I remember being very upset that i could't eat one of my favorite foods similar to how I feel about this waffle situation. But in my opinion as much as it sucks, It is so much safer for companies to withdrawl the sale of the products that aren't 100% safe and trustworthy rather than risking the health and lives of people all of the country and even world.

Chantel Washington: Black Male Fatally Shot By Tulsa Officer

ah. here we go again. Another innocent black male (Terence Crutcher) was first tasered then shot  on friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma by a police officer.
witnessed by family members, Tulsa had his hands up in the air the whole time before he got shot. According to Tulsa police cheif (Chuck Jordan) the victim of this tragic even had no firearms on him or in his car. Mr. Crutcher's twin sister demands a criminal charge to be filed against the "officer'' that shot him.

so. where to start on this topic. My question on this topic is basically the same as all the other incidents: why? Why do our "officers" shoot innocent people. Like i said in one of my other post, how can we feel protected from people who hurt and kill when our officers are those people. now, NOT ALL OFFICERS ARE LIKE THAT. i repeat, NOT ALL OFFICERS ARE LIKE THAT. (just to the people who need the clarification). anyhow, i dont even see how people could just shoot someone. especially when there are absolutely no reasons o do it. but im pretty sure that they will come up with some excuse as to why they did so. bottom line: THIS NEEDS TO STOP

Science debunks the five-second rule

Researchers from Rutgers studied how much bacteria is collected on different types of food on different types of surfaces. Bacteria doesn't wait 5 seconds before it collects to the food, it happens almost immediately or sometimes in less than a second. Though it is immediate, less bacteria is transferred in a short amount of time opposed to when it is left for longer. People who ignore this are just risking their health. After this was released to the internet, everyone said "duh"

my analysis: duh.

Three attacks happened in the United States within just 12 hours time, but the relativity still remains ambiguous. On Saturday September 17, 2016,  there were attacks on a New York City neighborhood, a mall in Minnesota, and a charity race in New Jersey.
In a neighborhood in New York, a bomb was planted that injured 29 people.
In New Jersey just hours earlier a pipe bomb exploded before thousands of runners were getting ready to run a 5k race that was a charity for marines and sailors.
After all of that a man was found in Minnesota wearing a uniform and was said to have stabbed 9 people at a mall, and the man asked the people if they were Muslim before stabbing. He was shot by a police officer after.

I don't think that there was anything planned among many people from one group. I believe that there are just horrible people in the world that don't want to live peacefully, so they choose to do things like this, and also there are just crazy people that can't help it. These kinds of people should get help instead of putting other people in danger.

Aeva Ramirez, gun control

There has been a bigger debate on gun control since the 2016 Presidential Election. Hillary Clinton does not believe in having the common citizens of the U.S. with easy access to guns as she has said, "I  believe weapons of war have no place on our streets." She does not mean to band them only to tighten the access and process of getting guns. Donald Trump believes whole heartedly that the second amendment if necessary, but agrees in tightening the process of acquiring a gun as well. The only difference is just how tight those regulations should be.

So lets talk about guns, basically both presidential candidates have the same agreement on Gun Control but it has been so overly publicized and exaggerated, that it comes across as, Hillary wants to get rid of guns when actually her and Trump have many common view points. If any thing the debate should be more about illegal guns and what the candidates will do to break down the illegal smuggling of guns. I personally do not have a strong decision on wether guns should be legal or not but I do believe in tightening regulations.

Stabbings in Minnesota Mall - Caleb Gutierrez

22 year old, Dahir Adan, went on a stabbing spree in a Minnesota mall this past Saturday. Dahir injured 9 people before being shot to death by an off duty police officer. Nobody was killed except Dahir. Isis quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.  Really people?? When is it gonna end? All this terror and all this violence? It's to much people. Terrorism needs to end ASAP. The government needs to upgrade their security and start cracking down on these attacks before they happen.

Brandalin Angrum

Isis is responsible for the stabbing attack of 9 innocents. The suspect was shot and killed by authorities. Police says the man was wearing clothing as if he was a private security, and began to attack the innocent by-standing shoppers. The police say that the stabbings happened at several different places of the mall. They called the man "a solider of the Islamic State." it was said that, "People came running around the corner, and i freaked out because i thought it was a terrorist attack or something because i saw a lot of people, so i grabbed my kids," i ran as much as i could and i heard someone yell Stop! Stop!' as soon as i hear the door shut i heard gunshots."

I find this completely sad, and honestly uncalled for. Think about it, what has our world come to? Why are people doing this? Why can't we just have peace and love and respect for everybody? I mean come on. We should all be tired of this. Because i know for a fact i am. Every time we look up someone is being killed, or doing something so dumb it causes their life to be lost. Or even someone elses.

President of Uzbekistan Dies

The first and only President of Uzbekistan died of a stroke on Friday, September 2, 2016. His name was Islam Karimov, and he led 25 strong years as a president (1989-2016). Two years after becoming president, he declared Uzbekistan as an independent country. Islam Karimov had a huge impact on the country. One thing he was well known for is setting up peaceful and foreign policies in Asia, and cooperating between many countries being concerned about human rights violation and corruption.

Amy Mills, 2 Officers Shot Whilst Answering Suicide Call

Two police officers in Fort Worth were investigating the death of an elderly man by gun shot wound when someone said there was a potential witness in the garden shed. When the officers opened the shed, a man opened fire on the two officers. Backup was called, and the shooter died (Either by his own bullet or an officers).

Teaghan Ortega - post #4 U.S. Military

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/16/politics/drone-strike-isis-minister-information/

Just weeks after ISIS suffered a major loss when its chief spokesman was taken out in an air attack, the US announced it had killed his close associate in a strike. The US targeted ISIS leader Wael Adel in a September 7 airstrike. The strike took out one of the very limited number of ISIS leaders who had direct access to Abu Bakr, the leader of ISIS. The US conducted the strike using a drone, hitting him on a motorcycle just outside a house in Raqqa. The US has now killed in the last two months two of the very few ISIS leaders with direct access to Baghdadi. Mohammad al-Adnani was killed in Syria in a US airstrike on August 30. He was thought to be in charge of external terror operations. Salman is assessed to have been one of the five most-senior officials in ISIS before he and Adnani were killed. Salman was responsible for overseeing the production of terrorist propaganda videos showing torture and executions. I think we should do everything we can to stop ISIS for destroying people's lives and property of America. The article talks about an anti- ISIS group that is slowly decreasing because ISIS children and men are killing them of silently. I believe that the military needs to be more aggressive about the ISIS group because they are threatening to take so many lives. We need to put and end to this!

The "Fault in our stars" couple

Katie Prager and Dalton Prager began there online romance at the age of 18. The couple fell in love while communicating on Facebook, but they both knew it would be dangerous for Katie, because Dalton had Burkholderia cepacia which is a highly contagious infection for people with cystic fibrosis. Katie's doctors warned her about meeting with other CF patients, but still, Katie asked Dalton to come visit her in Kentucky.

Katie said that" she would rather be really happy for 5 years then to be mediocre happy and live 20 years". Two years after they met they got married at the age of 20. Katie did get passed on Burkholderia cepacia, the couple waited for transplants at the university of Pittsburgh media center. Daltons's transplant came first on November 17,2014 and it was a success and in July 2015 Katie got hers. Dalton soon developed lymphoma, he had overcome the cancer , but then was hospitalized with pneumonia recently. Sadly Katie's transplant never worked correctly. she was always in and out of hospitals, and recently the doctors told her there was nothing more they could do.

Katie was in hospice in Kentucky, when her husband passed away on Saturday afternoon at Barnes Jewish hospital in St. Louis at 25 years old the couple were facetiming as Dalton was dying.

I think this is a very sad story but it's amazing how Katie chose to be happy for 5 years then be sad and alone for 20 years. the couples story really is like the movie the fault in our stars.

9 People Stabbed in Minnisota Mall,, Mirra Capper

ISIS claims to be responsible for an attack in a mall in Minnisota. The man who conducted the attack was shot dead by an off-duty police officer. None of the victims have died, only one was in critical condition. It has not yet been deemed a terrorist attack because of lack of motive.

This particular even scared me quite a bit because of other similar events happened the same day. This sort of thing could happen anywhere, luckily an officer was nearby.

Janette Davalos // New York

Analysis: I feel as if this is a very tragic event for many, but fortunately there weren't any fatalities. I feel like people in New York wouldn't have faced this if they were more aware of their surroundings, considering city life can be surprisingly dangerous. Although, people still can't understand why anybody would ever want to bomb New York. I hope they bring this case to justice and those that were injured shall heal.

Summary:This announcement was released last Saturday on September the 18th. The blast took place in Manhattan and was believed to be a terrorist attack. There was believed to be a "Second Device" near the explosion. They took this second device down immediately and searched the rest of the perimeter around the explosion. Thankfully, there were no fatalities and only 29 injuries, all of these people have been released from the hospital since then. Further more, the mayor has currently vowed to keep the community updated with further and info, and has also promised to find the person responsible for the bomb and bring the case to justice.

youtuber makes $1800 a month for eating.-valerie garcia (current event #4)

A boy from a suburban New York makes $1800 a month for reviewing fast food. He has done 600 reviews. He uses his money to get through college. He wears old time suites because he likes them and they make him stand out. People ask him why doesn't he review steaks if he wears suites and he simply answers that he wants to speak to a large base of people. That most people really don't eat steak on a regular but they do eat fast food.

i think you have to do what you have to do to support yourself and if him eating fast food and reviewing them gets him money and he's okay with that then let him do it. It's not like he is gonna do this as a career. He is going to college so he is probably gonna be something other an a youtuber.

Current Events #4 by Grayson Lesley - Milburn

On Friday, a devastating fire destroyed one of Peru's timeless churches.

San Sebastion once stood tall and beautiful, but now, it is burned and charred. Authorities have no clue what started the fire. After the smoke had cleared Peru's Ministry of Culture stated that 80% of the altar's roof and 60% of the main hallway were both destroyed and the roof was in danger of collapsing. As well as the church itself, there were countless pieces of timeless art made by the Cuzco School of Roman Catholic Art, created by Spanish rulers after the conquest of the Inca Empire in 1534.

Two canvases titled "Martyrdom of San Sebastian" and a sculpture of the church's namesake, dating from the 17th century were burned. The fire also destroyed the churches' altar of gold-gilded cedar wood.

The church had spent $1.5 in 2013 installing smoke censors and emergency lights.

Countless pieces of art were lost due to this fire. Not to mention the church itself. I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose something so valuable to our culture. It is very disheartening. I hope they do what needs to be done and hopefully make new art that is fire-proof.
