Extinction of Lions in West Africa - Molly Mahowald

New research concludes that within the next five years, 3/4 of the lions currently habituating in West Africa will become extinct. This tragedy is due to the hunting of the lion, their prey, and deforestation of their land into able land for other uses. The lions can no longer live in these harsh conditions, and the head count is plummeting immensely. Research occurring between October 2006 and May 2012 of live camera footage in the lion's habitats shows shrinking savannas and fewer residences for the wild animals. The lion's choice of mates is deteriorating, therefore reproduction is occurring less and less in the species. To prevent this extinction, people are attempting to take action in closing these lands to hunters and people who are planning to clear the lion's land. Because previous precautions have not been taken, the West African Lion is now listed as a critically endangered species. I believe serious action should be taken to prevent these lions from being attacked and killed. These lions need to be taken care of by humans if they cannot do it themselves.
