Bus Accident in Fiji - by Frances Garnett

A few days ago, a mother and her three year old daughter were killed at a bus stand, when one bus was speeding and didn't steer in the right direction, causing it to hit another parked bus. The speeding driver is now in custody. Bus operators observed a moment of silence for the deceased. The Transport Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, also told them to make sure that their employees behaved responsibly on the job. Since the accident, the image of bus operators is not very good, and the Ministry of Local Government and Urban Development is trying to upgrade the bus stand areas. Other accidents, though, are also being caused my reckless minibus drivers.

This incident, like many others that have happened, not just in Fiji, but all over the world, is very tragic, and I'm glad that some effort will be put into improving bus stations. It could be partly that Fiji is still improving its transportation system, but what country isn't? Even all the effort and money and laws in the world won't be able to stop reckless drivers, because my the time we teach one generation, a new one is born and has to learn all over again. Accidents happen, as we see in the news every day, even in the most developed countries. No matter how much we hate these awful events, all we can do is to do what we can to prevent them, even though that will never be enough.
