Jessica Ball - Week Two

Current Event: Oklahoma Earthquake

This morning of September 3rd, there was an earthquake that shook seven states in total. These states include Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. The epicenter was located in Pawnee, Oklahoma, and the magnitude of the quake was 5.6. Luckily there was minimal damage, but since the quake was around 4.35 miles deep it was felt from Texas to Iowa. The ground is said to be softer in the central and eastward regions of the United states, so the it allows the seismic waves to travel a farther distance. Since earthquakes are so rare in central America, this became popular on social media quite fast. I guess you could say many people are shaken up about this.

I chose to do my current event on this topic because since I live in an appartment on a higher floor this quake actually woke me up. Since I have never felt an earthquake before I was quite confused as to what was going. When I was looking for a current event to write about I saw this big headline about an earthquake that shook seven states, and then I realized that that I am not crazy, and my room was actually shaking. It’s interesting actually experiencing a situation where you don’t really know whats happening and then waking up the next morning seeing that it is national news.

  1. I am at my grandparents house and my grandfather told me how I had slept through it. He said his chair was shaking. I have heard about earthquakes from my mom since I was a little kid (She is from Oklahoma so she has experienced a lot of them) but, I have never experienced one for myself. At least not when I was awake.

  2. I think it would be scary to be in an earthquake. I hope that their were no deaths during this event.

  4. I also was not aware that the earthquake made the national news! Unfortunately, I was asleep and I did not feel the earthquake. A 4.35 magnitude earthquake is one that you will feel, but there is normally little damage.

  5. That's so cool that you actually felt this earthquake! I heard about it but did not feel it myself. I hope everyone who did feel it is safe and well and hopefully there won't be more earthquakes soon. I remmber that month or so last year where there was like 3-4 of them.
