Melanie Escalante- Free speech on campus?

At California State University, a group of students got asked to spread anti-abortion messages on the sidewalk with chalk. The university granted them permission due to freedom of speech. Shortly after these students finished their work on the concrete, a college professor told them they needed to remove it since it's not on the "free speech zone", which the president of California University said is not a thing- students can excerise their freedom of speech anywhere on campus and noone can stop it.  The college professor returned with some students and began erasing these messages while saying "you had permission to put it down; I have permission to get rid of it". He didn't stop there, he also continued my writing messages with an opposing view (pro-abortion). The student anti-abortion group contacted lawyers at Alliance Defending Freedom to file a lawsuit against the university professor.

This could possibly pass as a misread situation if the professor genuinely thought that there was a "free speech area" but then he proceeded to write his personal opinion which makes me believe that he did it out of hate. He didn't want an opinion that goes against his to be spread so he stopped it. However, this isn't fair. This goes against the law. The fact that these are students makes it worse because professors are supposed to support their students, not hold them back. He even went as far as to have others help him which makes him look manipulating. Being in college is the stage before starting your career and it's very crucial. It's not wise to hold them back because they're gonna be the ones to make a difference in our world. I hope the lawsuit goes through and these students get justice and inspire others to stay true to themselves and not let anyone run them over. http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/12/health/fresno-chalk-free-speech-trnd/index.html

  1. This professor was obviously just doing this out of spite. He does technically have the right to take it up, but that doesn't mean that he should. He is a professional so he should learn to act like one.

  2. To be quite fair, why was this allowed to be written on a campus anyways? Political issues should be discussed, but if written on school property that makes it look like the school is getting involved and is supporting that cause no matter what it is. Even if the tables turned and it started as pro-abortion, hang flyers up on billboards, but do not write it on school property.
