If you're going to draw a penalty, might as well go big. There are penalties that are ticky-tack. There are penalties that are judgment calls. And then there's what St. Louis Rams linebacker Daren Bates did on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, which was a penalty so egregious it became art. Bates leaped completely over the 49er offensive line en route to kicker Phil Dawson, the perfect ideal of an offsides penalty. He darn near beat the ball back to the holder. On the re-kick, Dawson put the ball between the uprights. It was San
Francisco's first score in a game that would ultimately see the 49ers
lose on a last-second fumble. The 49ers are going to want to forget this game. Bates, on the other hand, ought to add it to his Christmas card.
This is hilarious because even though Bates' penalty resulted in a 49er score, the Rams still won the game from another hilarious turnover.
