On this episode of last week tonight with John Oliver, John goes deep into the worsening issues with newspaper failure and how this issue affects all of us as citizens of the nation. John Oliver shows us how the local sources of news such as newspapers are the building blocks for the news that we receive through our phones and televisions everyday. Without these local sources of news, there's absolutely no conceivable way the hand of the media could reach all the things it does today. We may not realize just how much the local news outlets affect us, or how rapidly they are falling apart. John Oliver states that without the media being as free and local as it is today, things like political corruption will run rampant, because there's no outlet to expose it. This really drives home his point about the necessity for local news.
I think that there's a lot to be said about this subject, and it's not just, "I think news should remain the way it is" or "I don't think the news should remain the way it is". While I do believe that local news outlets are as important as John Oliver says they are, I feel as though there are other ways of maintaining them that he didn't touch on in the episode. The core argument was that the newspapers need to be profitable while still reporting on important, relevant news. I agree with this, but I think the newspaper element could be taken out of the equation entirely. The local news outlets could stay and should stay, I just think they should move to more mainstream forms of media.
I agree that local news is important because all other news we get is from major news sources and they can influence us to feel certain ways about a subject by only giving us the information they want us to hear.
