Recently, Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields has been crowned Miss America 2017. During the talent portion of the competition she performed a jazz dance to a song from the hit TV show "Smash" and answered a Q &A question about democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton. As the winner Savvy will get a 50,000 dollar college scholarship. Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt took first runner up followed by Miss New York Camille Sims as second runner up, and Miss Washington Alicia Cooper taking third runner up.
I feel that large scale beauty pageants such as this one and Miss World, Miss Universe etc. are very interesting to watch and hear about. I enjoy watching the talent portion and the Q&A portion because they exhibit the good qualities, skills and intelligence of the women and those are the important things that young women and girls everywhere should be watching on TV. However, segments of the Pageant such as the swimsuit competition are extremely sexist and have a lot of body shaming components because they are comparing the women based on physical appearance. The Miss Teen USA pageant just stopped doing the swimsuit portion just this year but Miss America will keep this section of the pageant in place for the foreseeable future.

I agree that they are very interesting to watch and that they should remove the swimsuit portion all together. It just seems pointless to have them walk around in swimsuits and heels.
ReplyDeleteWatching the show is very interesting but I do agree that showing their intelligence and then putting them in swimsuits really stinks. Hopefully if enough attention is brought to the subject we could have them take that part of the out of the pageant.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about the swimsuit portion of the competition. I do not think it is relevant at all to have that round. However talent and Q&A show the contestants personalities and intelligence.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said regarding the swimsuit portion. It us unnecessary. I believe Miss America should be crowned because of her intelligent and maybe talent, but certainty not body shape.
