Melanie Escalante- Double shooting by visitor at a California jail

Saturday morning, registered sex offender and known gang member Thong Vang, shot two correctional officers at Fresno County Jail. The initial incident occurred when Vang tried moving in front of the visitor line but an officer at the front desk told him to wait his turn. Vang then began wandering around the secure jail area. Officer Davila and Officer Scanlan told Vang to take a seat but Vang denied which lead to a physical confrontation. Vang opened fire and shot the officers once each in the head/neck area. Vang dropped his gun on the ground as other officers in the proximity of the incident held Vang at gunpoint so the injured officers could be taken to the ambulances waiting outside. Officer Davila is in critical but stable condition and Officer Scanlan is in critical condition. The Fresno County Jail is allowing donations to be made towards the wounded officers. Thong Vang was later charged with possession of drugs in jail, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The Fresno County Jail isn't allowing visitors until further notice. Authorities have said that they won't be making any quick changes in regards of jail security. However, i strongly disagree with that decision. You would think that because of what happened they would do everything in their power to improve. I understand wanting to evaluate the circumstances but it's also crucial to assure visitors and workers that they're safe in that environment. Perhaps the officers should be more hands on when checking for unwanted items in a jail environment or maybe the officers should work through more scenarios for situations like this. If someone was acting inappropriately I would've escorted them out instead of giving another chance. Overall, I hope the officers can make a strong recovery as well as the Fresno County Jail.

  1. What a sickening situation. Hopefully the procedures will be tweaked so events like this won't happen again

  2. It is crazy to think that someone can walk into a jail with a gun. I wonder why there are not stronger security procedures. It seems like this could have been avoided by searching individuals that come into the jail.
