Current Event: Italy Earthquake

On August 23rd of 2016 there was a devastating earthquake in Italy that affected the area where the Apennine Mountains are located, towards the center of the country. Earthquakes are caused by the movement of the Earth’s crust, and the African plate was shifting underneath the Eurasian plate.  The epicenter of the earthquake was located very close to the area of Amatrice, and towns in the area have been heavily damaged. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.2 and the death toll as of today has hit around 290. Even though the magnitude of the earthquake was not as high as other devastating earthquakes, it still did tons of damage.

The quake caused a lot of damage for two main reasons. The first reason is that the majority of the buildings in Amatrice were built centuries ago when there was not much knowledge about how to prevent damage from earthquakes. This caused the buildings to collapse very easily if the foundation needed for stability was never provided. The second reason why the quake was so bad was because it occurred approximately six miles beneath the surface which is categorized as a fairly shallow earthquake.  Shallow earthquakes cause a lot more damage than deeper ones because they cause the ground to shake a lot more.

After reading this article it seemed like the people affected were unprepared for this calamity. Hopefully buildings in Amatrice will be reconstructed with more stability to help prevent damage from any future earthquakes, and the people will be better informed on what to do and where to go if something like this happens again.

  1. This is such a sad event and I feel sorry for the people in Italy. I agree with you and hope that Italy takes this opportunity to improve building codes to make them stronger and safer in earthquake zones.

  6. Earthquakes cause so much damage. It's always disheartening to hear about the unsuspecting country, state or city that get hit. Hopefully in the future, people will be able to know when an oncoming earthquake is upon us/them. For now, we just have to send out our love to the people affected.

  7. I also did a current event on the earthquake in Italy. It is so tragic especially in Italy where is is harder for them to rebuild because of the fact that post-quake reconstruction attracts criminal gangs that are there.
