Summary: Two rhinos were killed in Ol Jogi Ranch, Kenya last Tuesday evening. They were killed by two unknown poachers in Laikipia North subcounty. Three suspects have been arrested by security officers at the park. The animals were found dead between 3pm and 6pm. A tusk was taken from the scene.
Analysis: It's clear that the reason for the poaching was again the amount of money that ivory tusks can be sold for in Africa. What they should do is just ban the selling of it anywhere in Africa; then the people living there would be less motivated to do it, since it'd be so difficult to sell. I know a couple countries have done this in Africa and it hasn't gone so well though; I'm hoping that that's just because neighboring countries haven't banned it, and they're killing there and selling in the neighboring countries. If that's the case, if all of Africa eventually banned it, maybe the poachers would just give up and find a new means to making money.

This is like the shark story. People will kill an animal for a single part of them! It's all about the money.
ReplyDeleteI agree - it's sad how humans will sacrifice their morals for something valuable - I'm also talking about the rich buyers who just want something luxurious. It's only the demand that's continuing this market, though it's also fueled by poverty. Something needs to be done to make sure that poachers have another job to make money, or else they may end up in terrible conditions.
ReplyDeleteGuys, sometime it is all about the money. Not all people who do illegal things are bad. Some have no choice and need money for their families. They must be going through tough battles with their consciences.
ReplyDeleteI've seen so many articles on poaching. I think people really need to address the problem of poaching and find a way to solve it!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, Frances! They do need to establish better jobs for the poachers so that there's not a need anymore to get out of poverty by killing the animals. And Amanda is right too, some do have families and need to provide for themselves. Hopefully something can be done to create jobs for the poachers and prevent further poaching of animals for items that are in high demand on the market like ivory.
