EU & Animal Welfare - Hannah Kalan


As of January 1, 2013, an estimated 40,000 "illegal" pigs are entering the food chain every hour. Back in 2001, it was decided that sows and immature female pigs should be kept in groups withing two and a half months of pregnancy in pig holding facilities with more than 10 sows. However, not all countries of the EU complied with this, only Luxembourg, the UK, and Sweden actually did. The remaining countries agreed to comply by January 1 of this year, however 80% of them still haven't.
