A province in China, Zhaoyuan City, held the trial for Zhang Lidong and daughter Zhang Fan this past October, and led to the conviction and recent execution of the two. Both had been held and convicted of murder at a McDonalds in Zhaoyuan City, brutally attacking
and murdering a woman named Wu Shuoyan, who apparently refused to give her phone number to the couple for a recruitment of theirs. The father and daughter, as well as other family members, were members of the prominent Chinese "Church of the Almighty God", also known as the 'Quannengshen'. Religious cults around China have created problems before, and "linked to kidnappings, violence and extortion, the Church of Almighty god has been on a list of 14 banned religious groups, issued by China's Ministry of Public Security, since 1995." This very unfortunate event of murder leaves no 'room' for negotiation or compensation according to the Supreme People's Court in China, due to the fact that "Zhang Fan and Lyu, another member of the group, called the victim an "evil spirit," before Zhang bludgeoned her head with a chair, then jumped on her and trampled her head". With this in mind, we can also see that China's government does not abide with recent terms of 'fairness' or 'justice' mentioned in other current event topics of the week. No doubt, there is no excuse for murder, and this cold-blooded act of outrage conjures no feelings of sympathy from me for these people, however, one must evaluate to what extent we should step in government power and execution. This applies especially to our current U.S. controversy over the death penalty and how we have viewed the government's role in society and in control over the people throughout the past.
My sympathy lies with the family and friends of the young murdered woman, and although we can hope for the best, I feel that this is not the last from this cult following.

It's terrifying when religious groups, such as these, are so zealous and extreme about their religion. If anything, religion should be used peacefully, not as a catalyst for murder. These groups need to be stopped before anymore get hurt.
