Rat Tribe Couple: Reagan Leslie
Zhang Qiuli, who is a pedicurist, Zhao Dao who doesn't have a bedroom bigger than a single bed, and Zhang Hao, who left their one year old son miles away to learn how "make it" in the Chinese capital, all live together in what the Chinese call "the rat tribe." They're called the rat tribe because they are the people who live in the underground and are in basements and air raid shelters in Beijing, China. In most cases, migrant workers cannot afford to paying housing, which means without the official resident permit(huoku), they don't have access to low-cost housing, so they end up living underground. The people that live down there are pretty young and have aspirations to move up the social mobility ladder. The people also try to make it as best as they can and think positively. At first, I thought it was a little weird that people were living underground, but now that reading the article, the people seem really cool.
