Jessica Ball Current Event 2/20/2017

Current Events: Zealandia
Zealandia is Earth’s new continent. New Zealand was always grouped with Australia, but New Zealand sits on a 1.8 million square mile continent, along with New Caledonia, and several other groups of islands. Before Zealandia was discovered, it was always thought that Australia and New Zealand were sitting on the same plate but not anymore! We would consider this the 8th continent, but geologists consider Europe and Asia to be only one continent, which is Eurasia, so it will be the 7th continent.
This is such a cool discovery that will one day be printed in textbooks! I always wonder what would have happened if explorers would have found New Zealand and Australia earlier than they did. I also wonder if the history of Australia is somewhere on our lesson plan because i know pretty much nothing about it. I wonder how closely associated New Zealand and Australia will be in the future since they aren't grouped on the same continent anmore. Or maybe they will just stay the same!
