Baby Box Blunders- Kennedi Mayes

Recently in England, there have been discussions of repealing the baby boxes that have recently been adopted throughout Europe. These boxes are places where mothers who don’t want their children can abandon them and give them a chance at life. The boxes are located in certain hospitals across Europe and they are basically incubators to keep the children warm. There is a motion sensor that causes a bell to go off 2 minutes after the baby is dropped off which gives the mother time to leave without her identity being known. Some humans’ rights advocates have tried to challenge the rationality of these boxes by saying, These boxes violate children's rights and also the rights of parents to get help from the state to raise their families."
There are two ways the argument can go really. On one side, forcing the mothers to face their problems might lead to child abuse and further social issues. On the other hand, it can lead to young people being able to be irresponsible and throw away their problems and recreate them. Also, this could act as a saving center for a mother who really can’t support her child.
The intentions for these baby boxes were good and aimed to help young mothers who were victims of different issues, but it really is a controversial topic because not only would this be taking away an opportunity for  a child to live a better life, but it would also be a huge waste of money if it’s revoked. I really don’t know which option would be the most beneficial for that country, but however the decision is made; I hope it will be made for the better and benefit of the young women.

  2. I didn't realize these "baby boxes" existed. And you're right, how controversial! On one hand, I completely support the idea. These children are given the opportunity for a better life that their own family would not be able to give them. But on the other hand, young adults might be reckless, and feel like with the baby boxes, whenever they get "tired" of having a child, they can just drop it off at the hospital. But hopefully most people don't think like this.

  3. I understand how hard of a decision this is because I realize that the baby boxes could be teaching the young women of England that they can make poor choices and their problems can be easily solved or it can a place of refuge for a child whose parents can't truly raise them properly.

  4. I mean I see how it can be helpful in some ways but in my mind that sounds awful. It is like abortion all over again in some way it is better but that is so sad to hear about something where a mother would just abandon their child and walk away.
