Husband wants answers over wife whose death sparked abortion debate
Nic
Robertson of CNN talks about the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar. Savita was
married to Praveen Halappanavar. They had
been trying to have a baby, and Savita finally got pregnant. Like any couple
they were ecstatic until Savita started having severe back pains. They rushed
her to the hospital and were told she was experiencing a miscarriage. The Halappanavar’s
then proceeded to ask for an abortion, and were told that as long as that child
was alive the hospital would not do the surgery. A few days later the baby
died, they removed it, and then a few days after that Savita died from blood
poisoning. This event outraged not only Ireland, but also many other places
around the world. They have started protesting and putting pressure on their politicians
to change/ update the abortion law, to prevent tragedies like this from
happening again.
I think this is a very sad article.
Savita could have still been alive today, if the doctors would have done what
they could to save her instead of staying with what they believed was “right”
based on their values and faith. In some ways this is a problematic situation because
everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including the hospital, but in
circumstances of this magnitude, I think we they could have worried less about
their faith, and more about saving the people supporting it.

That is so sad! I completely agree, they really should have been more concerned with saving the people, and if they were, lives could still be lived.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that a doctor's personal opinions should be set aside when someone else's life is at stake.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do not agree totally with abortion, I think that abortion should be an option in some situations. Such as this one. I think this is a good lesson for countries to learn.
