Husband Questions His Dead Wife's Medical Records That Caused an Abortion Debate By: Nina Bharadwaj
A terrible day in October changed husband of Savita Halappanavar, Praveen Halappanavar forever.
The two had settled in Ireland four years earlier, and now Praveen is a widower.
The 31 year old wife, Savita had died of blood poisoning after being denied an abortion for miscarrying a fetus in Ireland's laws.
Now Praveen has been deprived of both his beloved wife and his child. He now questions the truth behind the death of his wife.
Praveen told CNN that he has been messing around with medical records and that some important information in the medical reports are missing.
The loss of the reports concern the couple's plead for a termination.
The Galway/Roscommon University Hospitals Group has not commented on his claim.
Heath authorities have launched two inquiries-one into the wife's death and one into the critically ill patients. They were announced by the Board of the Health Information and Quality Authority on Friday.
Either way, whatever conclusions are reached, none will help the husband through this tough time.
The couple had moved to Galway with dreams of a bright future and a family, but when Savita became pregnant, things were not looking out so great. Seventeen weeks into her pregnancy, Savita had extreme back pain and had requested medical help.
Doctors at the Galway University Hospital had said that Savita was miscarrying and that her baby would not survive.
Savita pleaded for a termination, but was rejected because Ireland is a Catholic country and that the termination could not be carried out while the fetus was alive.
Three days later, the fetus died, and four days later, Savita died due to a blood infection.
The cause of her death has caused many outrages in Ireland. There have been many protests, in support of Savita all across the world, as well as Ireland. The protests have urged the country's government to update its' abortion laws.
In Ireland, an abortion is legal if the mothers life is at risk.
Prime Minister, Enda Kenny is under pressure to get Praveen to assist with a Health Service Executive Inquiry into his wife's death, but Halappanavar says that the government steps have done close to nothing to inspire confidence. This isn't because of the many weeks that it took for officials to announce the inquiry but because of the fact that 3 out of the 7 officials were from the same hospital containing his wife's death.
Even though the 3 officials have been replaced, more concerns are on the table.
The couple requested a termination, but there is no record of it. There are records of other requests though, such as tea, blankets, and toast.
Happlavanar says that he will settle for a minimum of a full public inquiry of a wider health service.
Praveen said"When they knew the baby was not going to survive, why not think about the bigger life which was the mother, my wife Savita? And they didn't."
All Praveen wants is the truth.
Analysis: I think the author of this article, Nic Robertson, wrote this article just to inform us about what issue is happening in Ireland. He was a little biased. He was on Praveens' side. He gave more quotes that Praveen said because he was on Praveens' side of the situation. The main idea of the article was just that the refusal of giving this women a termination has caused an outburst, in Ireland.
This is a terrible tragedy. If Ireland allows a termination if the mother is at risk of death, then why wouldn't they allow a termination for Savita's blood infection, when they knew that could have killed her? I think that a women should be allowed an abortion because she should choose whether she can raise a child or not. Although, I would rather the baby be put up for adoption, rather than the fetus be killed, but I can't really say what should be done because I can't control what an almost mother should do.

This is terrible, I have my opinion on abortion, but that doesn't matter. One life could have been saved, but instead two lives were lost. Hopefully this man can get justice and a peace of mind.
