The French elected a new leader, Jean-Francois Cope. The race was a close call; he won with 50.3% of the vote. Cope, an ally of Sarkovsky, who is the ex-president of France ran against Francois Fillon. They are both leaders of the UMP (Union for a Popular Movement). Cope was elected the new leader of the Union for a Popular Movement. The UMP had previously held the presidency in France for seventeen years, but in May a new Socialist Party leader was elected.
