48 People Dead After an Earthquake in Guatemala by Nina Bharadwaj

A horrifying earthquake off of the coast of Guatemala on Wednesday caused destroyed cars, collapsed roads, and many dead people.
President Otto Perez Molina tweeted that at a minimum of 48 people died, and that doctors had to treat about 150 others.
Guatemala's disaster relief agency reported that 29 people were nowhere to be found, and that many others had lost their homes.
The magnitude of this earthquake was 7.4, and it was felt as far north as Mexico City. The epicenter of it was about 15 miles off the western coast of Champerico, at a depth of 26 miles.
It has been the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since 1976, when the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.5, and it killed about 23,000 people.
Perez said with relief that it was fortunately not the same degree of damage of the previous earthquake.
Many roads collapsed in different locations around the coastal region of Guatemala.
On Facebook there are many photos showing the nations rubble and damage to a school roof in San Marcos.
There were reports of many homes and schools destroyed in western Guatemala. Many people quickly evacuated buildings when the earthquake hit.
About 60,000 people remained without power for a while, due to the earthquake.
It was very fortunate that the school year in Guatemala had just end, so no children were in school buildings while the earthquake was happening reported Perez.
140 miles away, in Guatemala city, the earthquake had caused a desk in McDonald's to sway side to side.
The government issued a "red alert", warning people to take precautions, due to this earthquake.

This is terrible. I hear about things like this happening all of the time, and recently I have been hearing about them even more often. It is just terrible because poor, innocent people have to suffer when they haven't done anything to deserve it. I hope that these people and their injuries recover soon. To the families of the people that die, I am so sorry that you have to deal with the loss of someone so dear to you.

  1. 48 lives lost from this terrible natural disaster. I feel the destruction is so significant not only because of the size of the earthquake, but because maybe Guatemala was not prepared for such a disaster. I hope help comes to all who need it, and donations will be sent.
