Guatemala quake deaths now at 52 - Joseph Katinas
Guatemala quake deaths now 52, expected to rise
From San Cristobal Cucho, Guatemala, the 10 members of the Vasquez family were found together under the rubble of their house, some in a desperate final hug, others clinging to the faintest of dying pulses.
After a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, one family's tragic story came to symbolize the horror of a disaster that killed at least 52 people and left at least 1,000 homeless, most without water or electricity.
Out of the whole family, only the oldest 19 year-old son survived. He stayed in the house while the rest of the family went into the quarry. His father had been planning a surprise graduation party for him before the quake hit. Ivan was too distraught to speak or even stay at the ruined house afterwards.
I think this article is very heart-breaking. It shows how nature can cause devastation and how you never know when you're safe. It also shows how we need better equipment to predict and protect us from the weather.
