In Argentina Voting
Age is Now 16
Addison Norman
This
past Wednesday the voting age of 18 was lowered to 16 in Argentina. This change
has increased the number of voters by 1.5 million. Argentina’s lower house
passed the law only having two votes against the law. Some say that President Cristina
Fernandez de Kirchner changed the voting age before a major election because
she is trying to gain more voters. Others think it’s a good way for young
people to get involved and take part in politics.
I
think that by lowering the voting age it makes young people more aware of
politics and the country they live in. Also, this gives them the chance to
participate in government.
I wish that they would do that here! But, then again, there would be a greater number of uninformed coters, that would solely rely on what they saw on television. That scares me a little, and I think that we could end up with someone like Mitt Romney in office.
