Several states in America have begun a school meal plan of “Breakfast After the Bell”, a plan that gives students a free healthy breakfast either in/after first period, or as a grab-and-go bag. This plan has already positively affected the children in the classrooms. Before the plan, either many of these children skipped breakfast, due to their family not having enough money or that they never had enough time to eat in the morning and make it to school on time. Others felt they would be labeled if they were the only ones in line who did not have to pay for their first meal of the day. More pros to this plan of action are that the attendance rate have increased, tardiness has dropped, kids have become more focused in class, and eating together each morning has given kids the sense of unity with one another. An example of a school participating in this program is Enrico Fermi School No. 17 in Rochester, N.Y. Now, they are serving their kindergarteners milk, cereal, apples, and cheese sticks each morning; later in the year, they will transition into hot plates of eggs, waffles, and breakfast pizza. Next school year, this plan will go nationwide for all schools with 40% or more of its students that take food stamps or other forms of federal assistance. Now, nothing can stop them from filling their bellies.
I love that schools are giving these free meals. It's the right thing to do for these innocent kids that should at least have three meals a day. Unfortunatley, humanity is imperfect and has caused economic struggle in the world. Many citizens have low incomes, incuding families like these. These kids don't deserve to be starved, they deserve to be nourished and alive. If they dont get the nourishment they deserve, thenm they won't learn on function as they should, harming their education. These children will be our future, and our future needs to be filled with smart, funtional, alive people.
