Lacking Social, Lacking Cellular-Kennedi Mayes

Lacking social activity in youth disrupts the nervous system’s development. New studies have shown that when animals are isolated during their early stages of life, their brain cells, called oligodendrocytes, don’t mature correctly. This is also true for children who have suffered from neglect and abuse and results in communication, socializing and cognitive issues. Some of the breached development found when the brain has been deprived of social reaction is also seen in people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Scientists are now faced with the question of how the effect of isolation and neglect can be linked to psychological disorders.

Neglect and abuse are definitely a force to be reckoned with when not every single household can be monitored for it, but for these scientists to have proof that it damages brains permanently, light bulbs should be coming on for people. Unfortunately though, most people who cause the damage really couldn't care less. Hopefully, this research will lead to a possible cure or rehab for people who were forced to not have any social reaction. This should be an inspiration for people who have good social lives to reach out and talk to that one person who doesn’t say much and eventually, social neglect will be conquered.

  1. This is very interesting to hear about this because I have heard stories about children who suffered from neglect, and that the children couldn't speck. I always wondered why, but know I understand.

  2. I have always been a bit suspicious about this. I have seen many documentaries poking little bits of something like this onto the general public. I think that the general public need to be more aware of things like this, because ... it would just help out the human race just a tad while we are still here.

  3. I find this very interesting. I can't believe that they have actually found a link between the two! I guess I should socialize a little more often...
