John Edward Smith with his grandmother.
Monday, September 24, 37-year-old John Edward Smith was cleared of a murder charge in which he was sent to prison for 19 years. When he was 18 years old, it was September 9, 1993 and Smith was at his grandmother's house when a shooting occured nearby. An eye-witness - who survived the shooting with a bullet wound - claimed that the shooter was Smith, and he recently admitted to lying under the pressure of the police. The police had told him that they knew who did it, and he felt like he had to go along with it.
Attorney Deirdre O'Connor says that lawyers and police often take "shortcuts" in gang cases, and Smith's case failed to be properly investigated at trial and on appeal.
Smith was released by the end of the day.
