New York Health Board and Soda Ban - Hannah Kalan
New York's City's Board of Health this past Thursday voted to ban the sale of sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and concessions stands to combat obesity. Out of the nine votes counted in the Board of Health, there was only one abstention against the ban.
NewYork's Mayor Michael Bloomberg had plenty to say on this matter. "One in eight New Yorkers suffer from diabetes, often linked to obesity," the mayor noted, and later said this, "New York City spends $4 billion a year on medical care for overweight people." "What we need in New York are sensible solutions to the obesity issue that focus on a comprehensive approach to tackle an extremely complex problem," said Eliot Hoff, who is a spokesperson for another beverage industry; New Yorkers for Beverage Choices. The McDonald's and Coca-Cola companies have called the ban 'misguided' and 'arbitrary' even though Mayor Bloomberg obviously called out that it is more 'beneficial' for the health of New York. He even tweeted that "6 months from today, our city will be an even healthier place."

I'm happy that at least one state is taking a stand against obesity, and I completely agree witht their reasons for doing this. Although I am in favor, I worry what other people will say. I don't think that they will go out without a fight. Protests, mobs, and pitchforks. Oh my.
ReplyDeleteI think that that's a great idea. There's no need to drink a soda over 16 ounces anyways!
