Union opts to continue Chicago teachers strike; mayor takes fight to court - Jack VanGorden

The teachers strike will head into a second week while the representative group of the Chicago Teachers Union decided to not end the walkout. They do this even though earlier the union leaders and school officials had reached a contract deal. Mayor Rahm Emanuel vows to go to court to force teachers back to work. He calls Sunday's deal, "a delay of choice that is wrong for our children." "I will not stand by while the children of Chicago are played as pawns in an internal dispute within a union," he adds. Members of the teachers' bargaining team detailed the contract to 800 union representatives. The delegates said they wanted more time to discuss the contract with union members. The House of Representatives will reconvene on Tuesday to discuss whether to end the strike. Even if the teachers do accept the contract they will not be happy. There were no classes all last week for more than 350,000 students in Chicago and depending on how Tuesday's meeting goes, it could be many more weeks.
