Amanda Kipp: Earthquake in Guatemala

Last Wednesday the Pacific/western coast of Guatemala was hit by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The tremors were felt all the way up to Mexico City, about 800 miles away! The earthquake caused a large amount of damage to houses, cars, and roads. 48 people died, 29 went missing, and more than 150 people were injured. In addition, many people's houses were completely destroyed. Guatemala has not experienced an earthquake this devestating and powerful since 1976 when a 7.5 magnitude quake struck the country and killed 23,000 people. Thankfully the damage of the recent quake was not as detremental as the 1976 one. Central America has really been suffering from natural disasters recently. Hopefully the governments of these countries will try to fund ways that will better protect themselves from more damage caused by hurricanes, earthquakes and other storms.
