Bolivia Regulates Social Media by Elaine Hennig

Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera has publicly warned anyone who criticizes President Evo Morales on social networks. He says he is "always online" and is "writing down the first and last names of those who insult him on Facebook and Twitter".  Comments like these have gotten the attention of free speech advocates and other opposition leaders, who say that the president should interact with people on the social networks, in an effort to better understand them. However, lawmakers from Morales' Movement for Socialism party want to make a law to officially regulate social media.

This is a significant issue because it threatens freedom of speech. Some think that people need to be more respectful on social networks, but others support free speech no matter what. This is a basic right that we have here in the US, but it could be taken away from Bolivians as a result of their president, who seems to be pushing more Socialism.

  1. I don't think this is fair to the Bolivians because one of their rights are being taken away from them because the president doesn't like what they say.
