Guatemala earthquake kills boy on first day of 'work'- Jamie Lerman
In Sans Marcos, Guatemala, Maria Francisca let her six year old son, Giovanni, go to 'work' for the first time with his older family members at a sand quarry. The mother had hesitations, but let her son go with his grandfather and uncle thinking he would be safe. but as it turned out, a 7.4 magnitude earth quake struck the quarry that day. "The mountain of sand had shifted as if it were made of sugar" stated an observer. 52 workers were killed, including Giovanni, his grandfather, and uncle. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the area since 1976, when a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit, killing 23,000 people.

Even though Giovanni was with his grandfather and uncle, a sand quarry is not an appropriate place for a 6 year old. Maria's thinking on the matter was understandable, but not the smartest. They had no warning of the disaster and it was no one's fault, but better judgments should have been made. A better preparation of a rescue system should have been made by the workers at the sand quarry for when such events occur, because as it says in the article, there was no one going to rescue at first and no one knew what to do.
