Hannah Menchu - Flowers, ritual, horse race mark Day of the Dead

October 31st and November 1st are celebrated in a much different way in Central and South America than in the United States.   Many of these cultures are mixing their ancient Aztec or Andean cultures with the newer Roman Catholic idea.   In many of these countries people fix the favorite foods of their loved ones at their grave or at their homes.  Graves are also decorated with flowers and sprinkle it with holy water.  In Guatemala the Day of the Dead is celebrated with a horse race known as “The Death Race”.  These cultures believe the world of the living and the dead co-exist.  The Day of the Dead is their holiday to seek help and protection from their dead loved ones.

It is great how these cultures honor their dead loved ones each year.  It seems like they celebrate the people’s lives not dwell on their death.

  2. People all over the world do so many things to celebrate their cultures, and it is amazing hearing about so many celebrations that are all unique, in their own way. It is really good how these people actually celebrate the lives that their loved ones had, and they don't just cry over the past. Everyones life should be celebrated one way or another.
