Hannah Selders- The death of Jutta Limbach
Jutta Limbach was a lawyer who became the first women to lead Germany's highest court. This past Saturday she died in her home. She was born on March 27, 1934 into a democratic family. By the time she was 11 World War II had ended. Limbach's generation had learned of the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes. In 2007 she told the Berlin daily newspaper "My family did something to develop my sense for human rights." Limbach studied law in Freiburg and Berlin. Being the first woman to do so, in 1972 became a law professor at the Free University of Berlin. From 1989 to 1994 she served what we know as the city-state of Berlin as senator for justice. In 1994 she was chosen as Germany's highest to the constitutional court, and kept this position until 2002. In 2003 she began to head a commission created to settle disputes over art seized by the Nazis, she continued to do so until her death. I chose to do this event because 1.) My mom grew up in Germany and had the privilege of living their during the time that Ms. Limbach served. and 2.) Because even though no girls had ever been able to have a seat in such a high position, it gives me more courage to know that I can do whatever I choose to do if I put my mind to it.
