Doctor Treats the Homeless - Mila Fisher

Dr. Jim O'Connell is a doctor who completed his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He could have chosen a cushy life as an oncologist, but instead he puts his degree to use helping the homeless of Boston. With his team of psychologists and social workers behind him, he makes his rounds each day, visiting around 20 patients. He knows them personally; where each one lives, and who to ask when they're missing. What started as a one year program to help the local homeless turned into a 32 year career as the head of the Boston Health Care for Homeless Program.

“You start to realize, ‘You know what, I’m just a doctor. And what I can do is I can get to know you and ease your suffering, just as I would as an oncologist,’” O’Connell said. “You could not find a more grateful population.”

What Dr. O'Connell has accomplished is a wonderful example of human kindness. His model should be implemented all over the world. Homeless people are too often pushed aside and dehumanized, and this shows care and support.

  1. I'm happy that some people can stop being ignorant and just help those in need instead of acting better than them.

  2. I bet the homeless and the community of Boston appreciates the selflessness that this man has. This is a great way to use your education and I wish there were more people like that.

  4. I wonder what caused Doctor O'Connell to leave his study of oncology. I would love to be an oncologist and help those to are affected by cancer. What he has done is amazing, and I'm sure his patients appreciate him as much as oncology patients would.

  5. This was a very selfless thing for him to do, and I am glad he is helping other people rather than focusing on himself and his career.
