A recent report done by the international institute for Strategic Studies determined that Mexico was the worlds second deadliest country in 2016 behind Syria. Mexico suffered the second most conflict deaths last year amounting to 23,000 deaths. This deaths took place due to the so called "war on drugs". 50,000 people were killed in Syria due to the ongoing war but there isn't an actual war going on in Mexico. Chief director of the IISS says these casualties are largely due to the small arms that many criminals involved in the drug trade keep on themselves at all times.
Mexico shouldn't be dealing with this many casualties year round, considering they aren't even fighting a war currently. New policies on open carry and gun licenses need to be enforced if Mexico hopes to truly end their ongoing war on drugs.
