Teachers go on Strike in Chicago- by Iris Hughey

On the Monday of September 10, Chicago public school teachers went on strike.  The Chicago Teacher's Union and the city's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, disagree about teachers' pay, teaching conditions and teacher benefits.  To protest the unfair conditions, the teachers dressed in red, and marched outside of schools in the city.  The strike was the first in 25 years in Chicago and it revealed a rift between unions and Mr. Emanuel. Negotiations continued late Monday night between Chicago Public Schools officials and leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union.  An official said that both sided need a night to digest the latest proposals.  Obama's input is that his principal concern is for the students and families who are affected by the situation.  He also hopes that both sides are able to come together to settle this issue for the sake of Chicago's students.

  2. Teaching has so many challenges. The rights and treatment of teachers is very important and education is greatly effected by class size, availability of books and supplies, and teacher attitude. I hope it can be worked out soon so everyone, teachers and students can get back to work.
