Guatemala Earthquake Kills 6 Year Old - Hannah Kalan



(Moises Castillo/ Associated Press ) - Soldiers and rescue workers search for victims at a sand extraction site after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck in San Marcos, Guatemala, Wednesday Nov. 7, 2012. The mountain village, some 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the epicenter, suffered much of the damage with some 30 homes collapsing in its center. There are three confirmed dead and many missing after the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since a deadly 1976 quake that killed 23,000.

The strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since 1976 was a catastrophe. The quake could be felt throughout Central America, even in Mexico City. However the worst of the disaster took place in Guatemala around the San Marcos vicinity. One of the first victims found in a sand quarry was only 6 years old, on his first day of 'work' after the school year had let out. His grandfather was wrapped around him underneath the mountain of sand, as if he'd tried to protect him to the end.
This was only the beginning of tragedy, as the 7.4 quake left at least 52 dead and hundreds of injuries with over 2200 homes destroyed.

  1. This is so sad. Earthquakes are deadly, and it makes me sad that this took away the life of an innocent child.
