Irish Protesters Rally for Abortion Rights by: Rachel Devine

Yesterday in Ireland, thousands of protesters gathered and marched through the streets of Dublin to mourn for Savita Halappanavar. This woman died after being refused an abortion. The protesters are demanding a change to the country's laws. The doctors who examined Halappanavar denied her an abortion even though she was in extreme pain. She ended up dying of Septicemia, a blood infection. The angry protesters chanted "Never again, never again" as they marched to the government builings. Abortion laws in Ireland are very strict and terminations are only allowed in exceptional circumstances. The Irish Supreme Court ruled that a woman could have an abortion only if there is a real risk to the life of the mother. However, the ruling was very unclear and most doctors don't allow it. The death of Halappanavar has just about put everyone over the edge and hopefully a new law will be passed soon.

I think it is so unfortunate that this poor woman died. I hope the protestors can change the lawmakers' minds and pass a new abortion law. It's not fair that doctors are denying women the choice of whether they want to have their baby or not. I hope a change is made in the near future.

  1. I think it is terrible that this woman did not have a choice of having an abortion. Maybe if she was allowed an abortion she would have lived and one more person's life could be saved. If Ireland allows abortions in special circumstances why wouldn't they let this woman have an abortion when she had a blood infection? I am pretty sure that is a rare circumstance. I hope that a new law is passed for the choice of abortion because women should choose whether they want to have a baby or not.
