On Saturday, an airplane that was going to land at the Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow from the Czech Republic missed the runway for landing and flew into a highway barrier then into the ground. Even though there were no passengers on board, there were eight crew members. Of those eight members, four of them died in the crash and the other four suffered head injuries and are now in various hospitals in Russia. Of those who died were the pilot, the co-pilot, a flight engineer, and a flight attendant. Up until a few days ago, the four other flight attendants in the hospitals were thought to be able to get better. One of these flight attendants who was wounded died in the hospital, raising the death toll from four to five. The Russian government is giving the families of those who were killed 1 million rubles or $33,000 in financial aid. Because of Russia's not so clean airplane crash history, the Russian aviation is setting new rules and guidelines for all airlines.
We hear about more and more airplane related deaths as the days go by. I think that countries around the world need to step up the safety, experience, and control of their airlines. What happened in Russia is tragic and should be prevented in the future by all means. I hope that Russia will be able to improve the safety and accuracy of its airlines soon.

Plane Crashes in Russia-Ausia Jones
On December 30, the plane, Tupolev Tu-204, capable of carrying 210 people, crashed. The plane had a good safety record compared to the other planes in Russia. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Four out of the eight passengers died. Families of those killed will be given 1 million rubles, which is about $33,000. There were not any passengers on the plane. All eight people on board were crew members. There was a video taken from a nearby highway and it shows debris from the plane, including a tire and what looks like a row of seats, flying onto the roadway. There were no serious injuries were reported on the highway. Analysis: I hope that the safety record improves so this doesn't happen again because this is terrible.

Italian Woman Scientist Dies- Margaret Canady
Rita Levi-Montalcini, an Italian Nobel prize-winning neurologist, has died at the age of 103. Miss Levi-Montalcini became one of Italy's finest and most respected figures for her discovery of nerve growth factor, which regulates the growth of cells. Her discovery and research have advanced the understandings of cancer, tumors, malformations, and senile dementia. In 1986, Miss Levi-Montalcini shared the Nobel prize for medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen.
Miss Levi-Montalcini was born in 1909 in Turin, Italy, to a rich Jewish family. After studying medicine and graduating in 1936, the fascist government banned Jews from having academic or professional careers. Instead of giving up, she set up a laboratory in her bedroom and experimented on chicken embryos. Miss Levi-Montalcini's family lived underground in Florence after the Germans invaded Italy in 1943; later she worked as a doctor for the allies that freed the city.
Miss Levi-Montalcini was admitted as a senator for life into the Italian upper house of parliament. She was also an ambassador for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and founded the Levi-Montalcini Foundation, which carries out charity work in Africa. Miss Levi-Montalcini died peacefully in her sleep. She carried out research for several hours each day up until her death. When she was 100, Miss Levi-Montalcini said in an interview, "At 100, I have a mind that is superior - thanks to experience - than when I was 20."
Before I read this article, I had never heard of Miss Levi-Montalcini, but she sounded like a wonderful, intelligent, strong lady. She did not give up her dream of becoming a scientist or working in medicine when fascism told her she could not. Instead, she set up a lab and continued her studies! And it is really amazing that even at age 103, she was still able to learn and use her mind. To top it off, Miss Levi-Montalcini was a woman, which must have made it even more difficult to receive credit for her accomplishments.

Celebration by Sylvie Lednicky
In Queen Elizabeth II's Christmas speech, she congratulated Britain for its very successful year. She explained that she was proud of her country for their determination and patriotism, and also how of how well they performed and hosted the Olympics. The Queen also reminded her constituants that the best thing they can do for themselves is to serve others, and leave their hearts to the lord. I find it truly inspiring that she is carrying on the tradition of a Christmas speech that has been carried out by the many royals before her. It is wonderful that she is such a great speaker, as her father was the king portrayed in "The King's Speech" with a terrible stutter that he managed to overcome. A Christmas speech gives everyone hope for the new year and even touches me, even though I don't live in Britain.

Freezing Weather - Elvira Gamboa
In Ukraine 83 people have died of the cold and there are many more who have hypothermia and frostbite. To help people warm up around 2800 heating areas have been set up for people to use. The lowest emparture in Ukraine, so far has been -17 degrees Celsius. Something similiar happened in Ukraine last year. It was very cold from January to Febuary which caused more than 110 people to die. The article also adds that "90% of the deaths were alcohol-related" which means many of the people had tried consuming alcohol to keep warm.

Pope criticizes gay marriage- Margaret Canady
During an end of year speech, the Pope added his two cents to the debate over gay marriage. He warned that mankind itself was at stake as new concepts of the traditional family change and adapt to the 21st century.
"The question of the family...is the question of what it means to be a man, and what it is necessary to do to be true men," he said. The Pope spoke against gender theories such as those of feminist gender theorist Simone de Beauvoir. She believed that sex was no longer an "element of nature", meaning that people had the choice, socially, to choose for themselves.
The Pope cited France's chief Rabbi Gilles Bernheim, who has spoken against gay marriage. The Pope spoke often about the "traditional family", saying that gay marriage attacks the structure of a family.
Early next year, France's parliament will debate passing the "marriage for all" government-backed bill. Despite opposition from right and religious groups, the bill is expected to pass. Last Sunday, tens of thousands of demonstrators turned out in France to support legalizing both gay marriage and adoption for gay couples.
I think the Pope's statements are really ignorant. I personally believe in acceptance of gay marriage; while I can understand the Pope being against it for religious reasons, it is false, exaggerated and misleading to say that the whole population of humankind is at stake because of it! Legalizing gay marriage isn't going to make mankind come to a stop. Unfortunately, the Pope influences a whole religion. Catholics will try to oppose gay marriage, even as the world moves forward and embraces the legalization.

Margaret Thatcher spends Christmas in the hospital-Cassidy Kaye
After having surgery to remove a growth in her bladder it has been announced that the "iron lady" will have to stay in the hospital over christmas. Thatcher was Britain's only female prime minister, Thatcher served from 1979 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. Spain's Billion Dollar Lottery By Madeline Ibarra
In Spain, the economic crisis leaves many people in debt or struggling. Some of the lucky and hardworking people of Spain were blessed on Saturday when thousands won stocks of the Christmas Lottery. The payout of this years Christmas Lottery in Spain was $2.2 billion which was handed out to thousands of people. This drawing became known as "El Gordo" or the fat one because of the massive amount of money. The largest amount of money won was $950 million or 43% of the overall prize which was won by some residents of the historic university town of Alcala de Henares, just east of Madrid. "Spaniards typically buy a share of a ticket, among friends or family, at the local bar or workplace, so the joy was spread around." The second biggest prize was won by a group of residents in the town of Aranda de Duero, north of Madrid. One man in that town bought what is know as a "full ticket" or 10 shares of the lottery, which is now worth $5.2 million. He said that he will be giving parts of his winnings to family and people in need. He also said that he will be buying a car and a decent home for his family. Spaniards spent 8% less on lottery tickets this year than last year, with the amount paid for one share being $68 compared to $73 last year.
I feel like this lottery is bringing the winners and their families closer. We usually hear about lottery winners going crazy with their money or something bad happening to them, but the Spanish people seem to become more loving and thankful for their blessing. For the people who won, I know that they will do practical and responsible things with their winnings. For the people who did not win as much as others, they will still be able to improve their lives.

Cold Weather Kills 83 people By: Zaria Chambers
In the Ukraine 83 people have been killed by cold weather. My other people are suffering from hypothermia and frostbite over 500 people have been admitted to the hospital because of hypothermia. Several "heating pots" have been set up for many of the people. Last year over 110 people died from the cold weather. Government officials say that the deaths were alcohol related because many people were drinking thinking that the alcohol would keep them warm.
This article was written by the CNN staff. Although so many people have died because of this, I don't think that this article has a negative or positive impact on readers because it has to do with mother nature and you really cant do anything about that.

Bike Around the World by Sarah Richman
32 year old, Juliana Buhring, of Naples, has become the first woman to ride around the entire globe on a bicycle. One day she just decided, " I'm going to ride around the world.", and she did! She went through 152 days, 18,000 miles, 18 countries, and 4 continents! She got hypothermia in New Zealand, where she thought she would die. Thankfully, a nice old couple helped her by feeding her and letting her rest. Although the trip was very difficult she was so thankful she did it.
"I remember getting to the top of a very high mountain in Greece, after a really hard ride, and being up above the clouds. I soared down the mountain with the sunset in my eyes and music in my ears. That was the best feeling in the world. I have never felt more alive."

This is such a tragedy, and i am so sorry for all of the families who lost loved ones. Hopefully they can get this under control and keep from losing any more lives.

Apocalypse? by Sarah Richman
When the movie 2012 came out in theaters, everyone was freaking out about how and when the world was going to end. In the movie, it states that the Mayan calender ends on December 21, 2012. People all over the world cam up with plans for how they would survive the explosions, zombies, floods, and radiation. The predictions were completely inaccurate and the only happening of any small amount of seriousness were 120 small earthquakes taking place all over the world.
83 Dead from Cold Weather By Sydney Magnall
83 people have now died from the cold weather in Ukraine. The freezing cold temperatures that are as low as -9 degrees Fahrenheit, have kept the capital, Kiev, under a hard freeze. In some areas the vehicles were trapped in an a traffic jam for three days that stretched for 12 miles long! Surrounding areas such as Bulgaria and Romania have been affected by the cold weather and they have had 6 people die. Meteorologist say the cold weather will continue and temperatures may drop even further. Luckily they have heating shelters to help save many peoples lives from freezing to death.
Since these temperatures may not be rising anytime soon I hope that people will start to take more precaution so that there will not be any more deaths. I cant believe 83 people have died from this weather. I am glad that they have heating shelters to help the homeless. Hopefully this will save many lives.

Mother Threatens Her Son's Life- Kennedi Mayes
Sally Roberts, a New Zealander currently living in England,
has been fighting to keep her son from receiving radiotherapy. Roberts says
that she doesn’t want her seven year old son, who is suffering from a brain
tumor named medulloblastoma, to suffer from the harsh side effects of the
chemicals. After a legal battle in court, the judge ruled the boy to undergo
radiotherapy. She hid her son from the court for four days to avoid him receiving
treatment. The boy has already had surgery to remove the tumor and doctors say
the only way to ensure the tumor doesn’t return is by giving him treatment. Roberts
wanted to try different methods of making sure the tumor was gone, but doctors
say her methods were too risky and it’s unknown if they actually work.
I hope the hospital can pry the boy from her in time for him
to be saved by the treatment. I know it’s hard to deal with a loved one being extremely
sick and needing harsh chemicals, but I’d rather have my loved one alive and
recovering, than dead and chemical free.

Extreme Weather in Ukraine by: Rachel Devine
In the past week, extremely low temperatures in Ukraine have killed 83 people and caused hundreds of people to recieve treatment for hypothermia and frostbite. Authorities in Ukraine have set up nearly 2,800 "heating points" to help people across the country stay warm. Arctic air has kept temperatures in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, below the average for a week now. At 1.4 degrees fahrenheit, many are suffering. The forecasters predict that the temperatures won't improve over the next few days. It was recorded that more than 110 people died in Ukraine last winter because of the cold weather. Hopefully the death toll won't rise anymore.
I can't imagine how cold it must be for the people living in Ukraine. I hope they stay warm and that no more people will have to suffer more than they already have.

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/mobile/article/novaya-gazetas-petition-against-adoption-bill-goes-missing-at-duma/473499.html
Novaya Gazeta made a petition which had over 100,000 signatures against a new legislation that would ban U.S. adoptions of Russian children, but it went missing before it got into the hands of lawmakers. The petition was shown to the Duma's republic affairs and media relations office on Mokhovaya Ulitsa, but it never made it to the state Duma on Okhotny ryad, RBC reported. President Vladimir Putin was imformed a day earlier of the collection of signatures. At the time, he said that Duma deputies should take the petition into consideration but that the public's initiative would not necessarily affect the legislation. The state Duma is set to consider the Dima Yakovlev bill for the third time friday. If the legislation is approved, it will then be sent to Putin to be signed into law. The bill would ban adoptions of Russian children by american citizens and place financial and visa sanctions on any Americans who violate the rights of Russians. If the bill is approved in its final reading, it could come into force as early as january.

Ireland wants to claim law on abortion - Sarah Oviedo
http://cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2012/12/18/lok-ireland-abortion-law-robertson.cnn
Ireland is wanting to claim a law on abortian due to the recent death of a woman and her baby. The law is stated to be that abortions are permissible when the life but not health of the mother is at risk! Many were touched by this, and feel that it is necessary to have a choice at times like that. The woman asked for an abortion during the miserable pain she was going through, but due to the heavy Catholic area, the hospital did not allow her to do so. They didn't believe in getting an abortion if the baby is alive, but allowable if the baby was dead. In result, the woman lost her life, as well as the child. I find this article to be touching and an eye opener to those mothers who choose to get abortions for other reasons. I don't necessarily think abortions are okay, only at times like these! Only because a loss of a child is not only sad and tragic, but doing it out of uncertainty isn't okay. Many mothers can't control the way there process of giving birth goes, but if it's life risking the mother should have a choice. In this case, the mother and baby didn't make it through. This law wanting to be passes in Irelane is very important and should be handled quickly before another case like this happens.
Ban U.S from adopting Russian children - Sarah Oviedo
http://cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2012/12/21/ban-closer-on-russian-adoptions-to-u-s-chance.cnn
Russia has decided to pass a law, stating that the U.S. is banned from adopting a russian child. This has been a conflict, due to the number of abuse rate rising. U.S. families are not only affected but, the choices for adoptive parents is lowering. The President of Russia is comfortable with this law, naming it "The Magnitsky act" in honor of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. The rates of adoptive children from the U.S. is so high, that it questions the russians whether or not this law should be passed and be set and stone. I think, that this law shouldn't be set and stone because these children need homes to feel loved and taken care of. If the "safety" of the right home for child is an issue, then the adoption restrictions should stricter and more worried about how that child will last in a new home. Maybe observing that child's home for 5 years or so, keeping a closer eye could prevent abuse from occuring. I find this article pretty sad, and I do believe that every child set for an adoption deserves a home, and if the government is going to try and control that, then they need to think of a plan that will keep the rate of these children actually being adopted, at the same amount or more as to if they were being adopted by U.S. familes.

Ukraine's weather kills 83 people - Sarah Oviedo
Ukraine recently has lost 83 lives due to a cold snap! The weather has been colder than the people in that area are able to handle. The picture above is a relief center providing warm food for those who are homeless and/or poor. Due to this relief center reaching out for those are unable to provide for themselves has saved more than 13,500 people in Ukraine. Many people are being treated from hypothermia and frostbite! 536 were diagnosed with this tragic disease, 83 lost there lives. Hospitals are also reaching out and offering 2,800 "heating points" across Ukraine. It's good to know that people are able to go out of there way to help the homeless. That's really nice of them, and it's good to know people are looking out for other people rather than walking away from the matter. This article has taught me how fortune I am, and how lucky I am to have a home with heat, and food to be able to survive.

Lilly's settlement with the U.S. Securities and exchange Commission Represents part of a broader bribery crackdown on the pharmaceutical industry by U.S criminal and civil authorities as they continue to probe corruption. In this case, the SEC alleged that a russian unit of indianapolis-based Eli Lilly used "marketing agreements" to funnel millions of dollars to government officials through offshore companies. Lilly agreed to the settlement with the SEC without admitting or denying the charges. Eli Lilly said that in addition to paying $24.9 million, it agreed to have an independent compliance consultant conduct a 60-day review of its internal controls and FCPA compliance. Nobles said that Lilly had cooperated with the U.S. investigators and strengthened its internal controls, including significant investment in a global anti-corruption program. In February, a review by Reuters showed that eight of the world's top ten drug makers, including Eli Lilly, had all warned investigators they would face liabilities related to corruption charges in overseas markets. Pfizer is on track to record $10 billion in sales from emerging markets this year, while j&j said Brazil, Russia, India, and China accounted for just under 10 percent of the $65 billion in sales it reported last year.

breanne moreno- president vladimir putin
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/mobile/article/putin-shows-hes-back-in-business/473467.html
On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin presided over a four and a half-hour news gathering, which signaled a return of the old days of his presidency. The president seemed to be comfortable when he was answering often unscripted questions from more than 60 journalists. He ignored attempts by his spokesman Dmitry Peskov to end the performance after 4 hours had gone by. The event for the reporters was held in the World Trade Center, in western Moscow, instead of the Kremlin.
A reporter from Izvestia accused Putin of building an authoritarian regime for personal power for 12 years. He asked, "Don't you think that this hinders Russia's development?" Putin said his decision to heed the constitution instead of changing it in 2008 and serving as prime minister for four years was ample proof that he was not authoritarian. He argued that it was not Moscow's fault that the U.S.- Russian "reset" offered by President Barack Obama was necessary. "We didn't make the name, it was suggested by our american partners," he said, adding that ties had deteriorated because of the Iraq war and U.S plans to install a missile defense system in Europe.
Later on, the audience was upbeat when a reporter for the Lifenews.ru online tabloid asked Putin when the end of the world was going to be. The president replied with: "In about 4.5 billion years when the sun will turn into a white dwarf." When Putin finally called the event over, the hall applauded.

breanne moreno-3 astronauts take off for christmas in space
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/mobile/news/article/3-astronauts-blast-off-for-holiday-in-space/473392.html
A soyuz spacecraft carrying a russian, canadian, and an american too off wednesday, for the international space station, where the astronauts are to spend half a year in orbit.
This soyuz TMA-07M built in russia took flight from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The crew of astronauts included the following men: canadian Chris Hadfield, U.S Tom Mashburn, cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, U.S Kevin Ford, russians Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin.
The television station of the United States space agency NASA, broadcasted the launch. After Ford, Novitsky and Tarelkin complete their mission in March, Hadfield will become the first Canadian to command the space station. Romaneko was seen off by his dad, Yury, who set a record for time spent in space during a mission in the 1970's. The six-man crew will celebrate christmas, New Year's Day, and Orthodox Christmas. "If despite all the arguments provided by scientists, this apocalypse still takes place, the ISS crew will be the only surviving earthlings," the Federal Space agency said in a statement. " Fortunately, that is just a fantasy."
Hadfield displayed optimism about the future of the future of the industry and said the voyages to the moon, which last happened 40 years ago, set an important precedent.
"What we are doing today as a group is continuing through that door and learning the things we need to do and taking one small step at a time so that we can better understand where we are in the universe," He said. (AP, Reuters)
I personally hope the astronauts have a safe trip not many get to do what these brave men are doing right now and it gives me inspiration that we all have the ability to do what we love as long as we try. I hope the astronauts are having an amazing adventure out there and I'm proud about the entire thing working out successfully. One day i would adore to visit the moon as well. Everyone should keep a strong heart forever and always to achieve everything they dream of. Sometimes the most extraordinary things in life are the simplest that we do not take advantage of.

Russian MP Strongly Backs US Adoption Ban-Molly Paley
Russian MPs strongly backed a ban on US adoption of Russian Children. The President of Russia scolded the MPs for their encouragement of the ban. The ban could really slow adoption of Russian children considering that 3,400 russian children were adopted last year by foreign parents and nearly one third of them were American. The move follows several instances where Russian children were allegedly mistreated by their adoptive American parents. I do not necessarily understand the situation fully but regardless the lives of children are at stake. If the bill passes, many childrens' dreams of being adopted may never come true.

Building Collapse Caused by Addition of Illegal Fourth Floor by Vittorio Chillemi

Firefighters in Palermo, Sicily, suspect that a collapse of two adjacent apartment buildings was caused by the addition of an illegal fourth floor, killing four and injuring twelve. Residents called firefighters after noticing cracks on the walls in one of the buildings. Six families were spared thanks to quick observation.
I believe that with these old, historic buildings, it is important to preserve them so such accidents don't happen.

Investigators Find Out That Turkey's Ex-President Was Not Poisoned - Lysette Barrera
It has been close to 20 years since the death of Turgut Ozal, who died of a heart attack. Since then, his family has publicly talked about suspicions of murder. There were rumors that the Turkish President may have been poisoned, since a thorough autopsy was not conducted right after the death, and therefore it was never determined exactly how he died. It has recently been concluded that his death was not caused by poisoning. Ozal was overweight and suffered hypertension, so a heart attack was bound to happen had it not been for a surgery he had in the U.S.

The Louvre... In a Coal Town? by Corran Nolan
In the small mining town of Lens, France, lights from a construction site across the street can be seen from Chez Cathy bar, owned by a man named Matthieu Debas. The lights, he says, come from the construction sight for a new branch of the Louvre, the famous French Museum, which houses pieces such as the Mona Lisa. This new museum has attracted a lot of attention to this small town, which most people are not used to. "Two days ago, we had Japanese TV. Yesterday, there was a German Culture radio," he says about the new people who are visiting the town. Many people including the mayor of the town, Guy Delacourt, can say that their ancestors who lived in the town have always been coal miners. However, the museum is expected to create 250 to 500 new jobs in Lens, not a small number by any comparison. The schools in and surrounding Lens have already planned trips and even entire courses having to do with the new museum, and expect many foreign students. They are also expecting a steady stream of tourism to the town, but at the moment do not have enough beds to house everyone they expect to come. But, a 4-star hotel is planned on being built by the owner of the Westminster Hotel in La Toquet, who says "I'm doing this because I believe in it."
This article shows that the town of Lens will be impacted both socially and economically by this new branch of the Louvre. Socially, the people of Lens will have a new museum to add to the culture of the town, as well as much more tourism and possibly new schools. Economically, there will be more business at existing businesses, as well as probably new businesses popping up. This will mean the town will go from underdeveloped to developed very quickly.

Can a prank take a life? You won't believe it. By Daizha Lankford
December 17th, 2012 an article was posted about the sad and tragic death of a young nurse named Jacintha Saldanha. The article was posted early this morning containing the specific reason for the taking of her own life. After getting the honor of treating Catharine, the Dutchess of Cambridge at the hospital. Being the attentive nurse she was, a phone call that seemed urgent came to to Dutchess and Prince. After figuring out it was a prank call she hung up, and a few hours later she was found dead. This article shows, how messing with other people's lives may seem funny, but really it is not. If a prank call can take someones life than it is a serious matter all schools need to discuss. Being teenagers and kids we play pranks and joke around a lot, but it is worth a persons life. Everyone should read this and think very carefully about all of the pranks we pull. What is funny to you, could be deadly to someone else.
Woman dies with smoker donor's lungs- Margaret Canady
Jennifer Wederell, a 27 year old woman from Hawkwell, Essex, England, died of cancer after receiving the donor lungs of a smoker. Jennifer had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of two, and was using an oxygen tank 24/7. She had been on the waiting list for a lung transplant for 18 months; when Harefield Hospital in London had found a match, Jennifer and her family quickly agreed. However, the hospital never told her the lungs she was receiving were those of middle-aged heavy smoker.
Jennifer's dad, Colin Grannell, believed his daughter would not have taken the lungs if she was given a choice. The Harefield NHS Foundation Trust said that the risks are higher if the patient declines the donor lungs and waits for a match that is from a non-smoker. However, they did apologize for not giving Jennifer the choice.
Jennifer received the transplant in April of 2011, and married her fiance in September of 2011. In February 2012, a malignant mass was found in her lungs.
This is so crazy...how was the patient who was receiving the lungs, using the lungs, and living with the lungs not told that they were the lungs of a heavy smoker? Obviously, that raises a bunch of red flags: are our hospitals trustworthy? How common are smoker lungs used in transplants? This London hospital obviously knew the donor was a smoker. It makes me wonder if they gave the lungs to her without warning her because they wanted her off the waiting list, and wanted her money. This infuriates me- she died because of the hospital's mistake. Her father said, "she was dying a death that was meant for someone else," and I completely agree.

How Dunblane Reacted to the 1996 Shooting -Hadassah Lai
In 1996, in a small Scottish town called Dunblane, a shooting had occured in a school. The result had costed 16 young innocent children their lives. A few teachers had also died in the process and their deaths had all their family and friends much grief. The government of the United Kingdom then brainstormed ideas to see how they could stop such a tragedy from happening again. The result was to ban all private ownership of guns anywhere in the UK. This law is probably one of the toughest law to follow in the world. However, since 1996, no shootings in the UK has happened yet.
I think that this law is an extremely wise idea. The United States has suffered more shootings in 2012 than in any other year and has one of the highest rates of shootings in the world. The fact that all these shootings has caused many innocent lives by some lunatic of a person just makes me infuriated. I think that the United States' government should follow after the UK's footsteps and ban all private ownership of guns. Yes, many people will retaliate saying that the gun is for their own safety. I think that without people owning private guns we will have a safer environment and it will discourage sinister people from executing a shooting.

Total Solar Eclipse by Heather McKay
A rare and beautiful event occurred in Australia early Saturday morning...a total solar eclipse. This happens when the sun and moon are perfectly lined up and cross over each other. Scientists say it will not occur in this region for another 360 years. People all over Australia gathered to witness this 2 minute marvel. While most people watched on beaches or in boats, many people took flight in a hot air balloon to get a good look. This truly is was beautiful event to experience.

Analysis: I think that reopening Amy Winehouse's probe will let us know that really happened since we were not so sure the first time. I know that I personally would be really interested in what actually happened since I was such a big fan of hers. Hopefully we will know the truth.

"Dunblane: How UK school massacre led to tighter gun control"
On March 13 , 1996, Tomas Hamilton , a 43 year old Scout leader burst into the gymnasium of a primary school in a Scottish town of, Dunblane.
A campaign against owing a gun made a petition with 750,000 names and was handed to the government. The British public supported the ban for the guns. Some of the students know how the kids in Connecticut feel, and some like Andy Murray send a message to those kids "My heart goes out to all those poor children, their families and the community in Newtown in Connecticut, so so sad." Is banning guns in the UK , helpful?

Tipsy Elephants by Amaria Sterm
Two Russian elephants were said to have been saved from Siberian cold by drinking Vodka. Two cases of Vodka was mixed with warm water to warm the elephants after the suffered from frostbite in the cold. One official stated, "They started roaring like if they were in the jungle! Perhaps, they were happy,"
They were taken care of in a heated garage after their life-saving beverage. The two elephants have been touring with a Polish circus. Officials say that the elephants were not intoxicated and would have died without it.
I think that this is a cute and funny story that shows how human pleasures can save animals. It just goes to show that alcohol's affect is not always negative.

Hannah Menchu - Depardieu 'to give up passport' in tax exile row
French actor Gerard Depardieu has been criticized by the prime minister for moving from his homeland of France to Belgium. The prime minister says the move is to avoid paying the high taxes in France. Next year, the top rate of income tax in France is due to become 75% on earnings above 1m euros. It is currently 50% in Belgium. Depardieu told the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, "I am not asking to be approved of, but I could at least be respected. All
of those who have left France have not been insulted as I have been." Depardieu said that during his long career he had paid 145m euros (£118m) to the French taxman. Three months ago France's richest man, Bernard Arnault, announced plans
to relocate to Belgium although he denied it was for tax reasons. The tax rate of 75% for the wealthiest people in France is an outrageous amount! Everyone should pay their fair share, but it seems to be a very extreme percentage.

Unclaimed 64 million pound lottery ticket by Graysha Assoun
Six months ago, a ticket was bought for the Euromillions lottery draw near Stevenage in North London. The money, if won, would amount to 63.8 million pounds or $103 million. Unfortunately, this lottery ticket has not yet been claimed. The search for the winner has made people frantic and hopeful that it could be them. The money, with interest, will go to charity on Wednesday if no one claims it. Even a billboard in Hitchin has been put up to alert any stragglers that may be the winner. Many people have their suspicions on what happened to the winner, but if not claimed it will go to a good cause. The five numbers are 5, 11, 22, 34 and 40, and the Lucky Star numbers -- 9 and 11.

The Nurse Who Took the Call- Teedee Simons
Last Monday a funeral was held for a nurse who took a prank call from two Australian DJs. They called acting as the queen asking how duchess Catherine was doing. Jacintha Saldanha, the Indian nurse, awnsered the call and gave away some private medical information. After she became suspicous she hung up, but the Australians had already gotten their laugh. People found her dead in the hospital living quarters. She had hung herself from a wardrobe and had left three notes within her belongings. The toes are disclosed to the public but her death is indicated as a suicide.

I found this information on CNN and Laura Smith, Susanna Polk, and Jack Maddox also contributed to this article. This article was written today, December 17. The authors focused on the nurse and her death than on the DJs and the royal family. The article informed me on the background of the situation and her family. I found this information on CNN and Laura Smith, Susanna Polk, and Jack Maddox also contributed to this article. This article was written today, December 17. The authors focused on the nurse and her death than on the DJs and the royal family. The article informed me on the background of the situation and her family. Tis article is for people who care about workers in the medical world and those who care about the drama in the royal family.
Women Busted for Handling Cocaine in her Breasts by Graysha Assoun
In Spain a woman was busted for having cocaine in her breasts implants. She was found out in an airport security check. She was questioned about why she was in town and she kept giving vague, suspicious answers. It aroused suspicion not only because she was on board a "hot flight" form a destination known for drug trafficking, but also because an officer found bloodied bandage material under the woman's breasts. The bandage was supposedly covering incisions and it was also covering a foreign white material. The woman explained that they were fresh breast implants that hadn't completely healed, but worried police officers sent her to a hospital. At the hospital the doctors found nearly 1.4 kilograms of cocaine under her breasts, which is the same as 3lbs. of cocaine. To put under perspective, pure cocaine costs $35,000 per pound. She was immediately sent to jail.
This crazy story showed us how hard it is to hide drugs from the police. It also tells us that drug trafficking is a horrible and unnecessary business that is way too life threatening.

EU to solve overfishing dilema- Amanda Cervantes
Overfishing in euopean seas such as the mediterranean and the north sea has slowly reduced the number of wildlife under the water.Tomorrow on December 18 fisherie commitees will join with the EU to vote on a reform for the EU's common fisheries policy. In June, the european commission proposed fishing limits for 2013. and have shown some improvements in the Atlantic ocean where overfishing rates have dropped. This will help make fishing more profitable and restore about 43% of stocks for the next years.

Gas prices lower for the holidays by: Milan Hamilton
The national average price of gas has dropped to under $3.25 a gallon. That is the lowest average in about 2 years. The average price of gas has dropped every day in December for a total of 15.4 cents a gallon so far for a month, that is a 4.5% drop in less than three weeks! The AAA (American Automobile Association) predicted that the money that people don't spend at the gas station could be used for presents, dining, travel etc. The gas prices are expected to drop throughout the month and possibly reach an average of $3.20 a gallon.
I could not really find anything to use as my current event in Europe and I figured that everyone would be writing about the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, so I thought that talking about the gas would be a great idea! This is important because it is affecting us all as we speak. The gas prices are lowering allowing people to do more over the holidays with the money that they are saving. http://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/17/travel/gas-prices-aaa/index.html?hpt=us_c2

Gun Debates in the US by Cruz Rendon
After the recent shooting in Connecticut that impacted the world, senators Mark Warner and Joe Manchin think action should be taken of the matter. They think it isn't acceptable to own the weapons at certain times. They want the tragedies to end. 20 children were killed in the shooting. Does anyone else agree that extra measures should be taken? Even at school we aren't safe. If we aren't safe at school then we aren't safe anywhere.
Norway's Worst Mass Murder by Corsica Steding
The attack occurred less one-hour after The Noble
Peace Prize was awarded in Oslo, Norway.
Even though this event was dropped from the headlines, the president of
the European Parliament visited the following day. The criminal, Anders
Behring Breivik, first detonated a bomb in downtown Oslo that killed 8 people.
He then took a ferry to Utoya where there is an annual camp for young
members of Norway's Labor Party. He shot everyone he could, and in the
end killed 69 people. Most of these victims were teenagers. He
admitted to having killed all of the innocent people, and is now sentenced to
21 years in jail.
Jonathan Mann wrote this article for CNN on December 13th. Before
reading this article I had heard of horrific events like this one. This
article is written to tell the rest of the world what happened considering the story was dropped from headlines. It was also written to update
people on the criminal's punishment. This article serves as a sad reminder
that extremely awful, evil things happen in the world even if we don't
understand why.

Nurse in UK royals prank buried in India - Jack VanGorden
Hundreds gathered this last Monday to mourn the India-born nurse that killed herself after the prank call about Prince William's pregnant wife. The service was held in southwest India. Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse that worked at the hospital that Kate was being treated at, was buried after a mass at Our Lady of Health. About 3,000 individuals attended the service. In early December, Saldanha took a prank call from two Australian radio show hosts who pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles. Believing the two, she transferred the call to the hospital ward. After the hosts got some information, the phone call ended. Saldanha was then found hanging from a wardrobe at the hospital living quarters. According to the court, she left three notes around the hospital. Her family morns over the tragic loss and the show was taken off the radio.

Cocaine Breast Implants..? by Amanda Kipp
Last week, a woman flying from Bogota, Columbia (a destination known for a lot of drug trafficing) to Barcelona, Spain had blood under her breasts. First, this passenger was questioned by some security officers who were skeptical of her "vague" anwsers. An officer patted down the passenger and found some bloody bandages under the woman's breasts. These bandages were hiding cuts and her breasts were hiding a "suspicous white substance." The suspect tried to tell officers that her new implants "didn't heal correctly" but they did not believe it so they took her to a local hospital. At the hospital, medics "extracted a bag-shaped prosthesis from each breast, containing a white, pasty substance." It turned out to be about 3 pounds of cocaine, worth $35,000 per pound.

Nurse in U.K. prank buried in India- Joseph Katinas
Many mourners packed a church in southwest India on Monday to honor the Indian-born nurse believed to have hung herself after taking a prank call treating Prince William's pregnant wife.
Jacintha Saldanha was buried on Monday at an Indian Ceremony which over 3,000 people attended.
She was found dead on December 7th in a wardrobe of the hospital. Her family has expressed their sorrow.
I find this article sad. Although I knew already about the situation, I didn't know anything about the nurse. I hope she can rest in peace.

Drama in France -Megan Darlington
French actor Gerard Depardieu says he is handing back his French passport after the prime minister criticised him for moving to Belgium to avoid taxes. He is highly offended by the prime minister. 63 year old said he is moving to belgium.
I would be offended too. I dont think its cool for people to call him out especially sonce he paid many taxes to france. I dont think this should have been national news because its over something very silly.
Dublane shares pain of Connecticut school shooting- Rian Pettit
Small Scottish town by the name of Dublane, shares the pain that was caused by the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that left 28 dead: 20 students, 6 faculty members, the shooter and his mother. This is particularly scarring for the town of Dublane, because it rings back horrible memories of Britain's worst school massacre in 1996, when a gunman came and shot 16 children, the teacher, and then himself.
"The memories are flooding back. It must be hell for the parents. We said prayers for them in my church," said Harry McEwan, 71, who has lived in the town for 30 years. "Dunblane has so much in common with what has happened in Newtown."
The massacre in Dublane has led to Britain adopting some of the strictest gun controls in the world.
This story is touching, because it shows not only was Newtown affected, but it affected everyone around the world. This is a true tragedy that all these innocent, defenseless people were lost and it is nice to see everyone pulling together to offer their support to help all the families and citizens of Newtown, Connecticut.

"Ready. Set. Memorize!" By sydney magnall
This years world memory championships are going to be held in London. This event is where people from all over memorize the most numbers, faces, playing cards or random words in a set amount of time. Dong Xun, Who is 10 says, "I want to remember 250 this time," he says. Yudi Lesmana says he can memorize about 25 decks of cards an hour. these competitors are using there brains to remember things where most people just use there phones. This boosts there brain power. Nelson Dellis, The U.S, champion says he started because his grandma had Alzheimer's and he wanted his memory to get better. I really liked his quote when he said "Because people realize that they're not using their brains as much," "They notice that they don't remember numbers or addresses because they're always typing them into their smart phones, you know?"
I never would have guessed an event like this actually occurs. I really am glad that something like this does take place. Its good to know people are not always relying on their smart phones to memorize stuff.

"London Cabs to Offer Free Wi-Fi in 2013" by Elaine Hennig
Starting in March of 2013, London taxi cab passengers will have access to a free Wi-Fi service called CabWiFi. This will be one of the first offers of in-cab Wi-Fi, and London will be the first city to do this. The goal is to make Wi-Fi a standard in all London black cabs. This is a great advancement for travelers who want to avoid data-roaming charges, or for any frequent cab rider who wants to pass the time away during a ride. The service will also benefit the cab drivers, who have to pay high bills for using taxi-apps.
This is significant because it is an important technology advancement. This is something that will benefit many people. It is even more of an advancement because it can be provided for free! It will probably spread all over the world to many other large cities. This is a great example of cultural diffusion.

Nobels bring mourning for victims of Norway's worst mass murder-Deyzya Hardeman
The Nobel Peace price is being awarded this week, while a small town close by is mourning and walking through the cold in a place that seems almost haunted.
"It started with a deadly blast in downtown Oslo that killed eight people. In confusion that followed, the anti-immigrant extremist who detonated the bomb drove roughly 45 minutes to a ferry that took him to Utoya, the scene of an annual summer camp for young members of Norway's Labor Party. He methodically gunned down everyone he could find and killed 69 people, most of them teenagers" -CNN News.
The island that they were visiting was the place where all 69 people were murdered. This is one of Europe's worst massacre masses ever in history.
