| Parents say the essay question 'almost encourages' children to commit suicide |
A teacher in France was suspended after asking pupils to write an essay about what it would be like to want to kill themselves. The students were asked to come up with reasons for committing suicide and describe what it would feel like. Parents were furious and contacted the national education department, then sent a copy of the assignment to a local newspaper. Jean-Marie Renault, a regional director for the education ministry, said, "If the facts are proven to be accurate, I cannot let this pass. Yes,
there could sanctions. The teacher will have to explain herself." "We are disgusted that someone would give this type of topic to children
who are between 13 and 14 years of age," parents told the paper. "We are not in the habit of questioning what happens at school, but
there are limits. What will be the next topic? 'How do you feel when you
shoot up drugs?'"

Wow. This is shocking to say the least. What could have possibly be going through this teacher's mind that could have ever make them think that this was a good idea? I am very displeased in the education system.

ReplyDeleteI hope those kids have manditory counseling just in case or something so they won't think of suicide.

This could have been a trigger for the teenagers who might have been bullied or in depression. I suppose it also depends on the context of the lesson, but the way she presented the topic is unacceptable.

ReplyDeleteThat is ridiculous. Teachers shouldn't be asking students to write about killing themselves. These teenagers might already have low self-esteems, and just writing about it could make things get so much worse. I can see why these parents would be furious. Parents don't want to actually have their kids think about this stuff. Imagine what kinds of emotions this could bring out. I hope that this teacher has learned their lesson.
ReplyDeleteThat is ridiculous, what if a student actually took it seriously? Then she would feel really stupid cause they killed themselves with her help. I think she should not be suspended, but fired and not be able to teach again.
