Surgeon's Infected hands led to Staff Infections by Sydney May

Sydney May

In Los Angeles, a nameless doctor (protected by his hospital), performed many surgeries with infected hands. He had an inflammation on his hands while performing five heart valve surgeries. He wore gloves, but the infection cause microscopic tears, therefore revealing the patient to what was on his hands. This caused a spread of staff infections in all five patients, which was devastating to the families. This surgery was performed last June, but the infections apparently just started to show symptoms that could be potentially harmful to the patients involved. The surgeon is eternally apologetic and is no longer performing surgeries, but instead just helping out with the hospital staff. This article was posted nine hours before I read it on December 10, so it is very recent information. I know nothing about the author, who is Sharon Bernstien, but she seemed to be a very informative writer and I thought the author was intriguing. Its incredible how one little mistake can change the lives of many, and I hope they get better quick!

  3. I think that the infection must have been in a stage where it wasn't detectable yet it was spreadable. Like when you have a cold, and you don't know you are sick yet. This is very unfortunate for the patients, and for the reputation of the doctor. Sometimes stuff happens.

  4. That's not fair that his patients have to suffer from his infection. It's also bad, because the five patients trusted him to do their surgery.

  5. Why didn't he say anything about the infections or sanitize his hands?
